Facts & info

http://www.floowie.com/cs/cti/BedekerPrague-2010-6/

Welcome to Prague! Whether you’ve just landed, arrived by train, bus or car, we’ve got the all-important low down on how to reach the city center using all the possible means of transportation, whether on a tight budget or otherwise. arriving 1. ARRIVING BY PLANE The airport is located on the northwest edge of Prague, some 20km (12 miles) from the city center. Although Prague boasts other, smaller airports, all international flights operate through Ruzyně. Important related phone numbers include +420 220 113 314 (general info), +420 220 116 072 (baggage claim) and +420 220 114 283 (lost & found). GETTING TO THE CITY CENTRE... If you’ve just arrived at the airport, getting downtown is generally, depending on the traffic, a matter of some 20 to 30 minutes (if you make use of a taxi or a shuttle service; see below), or 50 minutes if you use the cheaper yet convenient and comfortable public transportation. ...BY PUBLIC TRANSPORTATION Bus presents the cheapest way of reaching Prague’s city center. It links the airport with the terminus of one of Prague’s three subway lines. Use the ATMs in the arrivals hall to get Czech crowns, rather than changing money at the overpriced exchange offices. You can either buy your ticket from the kiosk or the transport information desk in both arrival halls (open 7AM – 10PM), from the coin vending machines located right at the bus stop platform, or directly from the driver, although this will cost a couple extra crowns. The ticket price is 26 Czech crowns (1EUR / 1.3USD) for a transfer ticket that remains valid for the follow- up subway ride, or for a total of 75 minutes, plus an extra 13 crowns for larger pieces of luggage. 8

BUS # 119 – This will probably be most people’s choice as the 119 provides the quickest connection to the historical center. Depending on the time of day, it runs every 7 to 20 minutes and gets you to the A line of Prague’s subway. Hop on, remember to validate your ticket, and don’t get off until the final stop (Dejvická). The subway entrance is next to where you get off. The bus runs from 4:18AM until 12:10 AM. BUS # 100 – The 100 bus links the airport with the B-line of the Prague subway. Just get off at Zličín, the final stop. The 100 runs every 15 minutes throughout the day and every half hour after 7PM. The ride takes 15 minutes, but expect another 20 minutes of subway ride if you’re aiming to reach the city center afterwards by metro. The bus runs from 5:30AM until around 11:50 PM. AIRPORT EXPRESS BUS – The Airport Express bus service links the airport with the Hlavni nadrazi train station; it runs every half hour and the ride takes 40 minutes. Although part of Prague’s public transportation system, special fares apply: tickets can be purchased solely from the driver and run for 50 crowns (with no extra luggage fees). The AE runs from from 5:00AM to 10:00PM. TRAVELLING AT NIGHT – If you want to use the public transportation at night, look out for the # 510 bus, operating between midnight and 3.30AM and linking the airport with the tram at Divoka Sarka. From there, take the tram # 51 to the city center. Note that the night bus runs every 30 minutes. ...BY SHUTTLE Various companies run shuttle door-to-door services, or drop you off at the city center. They are generally priced lower compared to taxis, and can be easily found outside the terminals. The CEDAZ minibus shuttles run every half hour and costs 120 crowns per person, dropping you off at the city center. The service operates between 5:30AM and 9:30PM. CEDAZ will also drive you directly to any given address, but you need to pre-book (call +420 211 111 111 or go to www.cedaz.cz). Other shuttle services include Prague Airport Transfers who accept credit cards (www.prague-airport-transfers. com). ...BY TAXI Prague taxi drivers are notorious for overcharging tourists. Generally, you should be on the safe side arriving 10

http://www.floowie.com/cs/cti/BedekerPrague-2010-6/

with the fleet of AAA-labelled taxis waiting in front of the terminal. The ride will cost around 500–700 crowns. Don’t shy away from contacting a competing company, but make sure to always check the price beforehand! You shouldn’t ever have to pay over 900 crowns. 2. ARRIVING BY TRAIN International trains arrive at the central station, Hlavní nádraží, often referred to as Praha hl.n. The station is directly connected with Prague’s subway system and located right in the city centre. If arriving after dark, we highly recommend hopping on the subway (remember to buy a ticket) rather than walking out and through the surrounding park. Most of the station itself has just been refurbished and boasts a modern look with plenty of kiosks, drug stores and fast-food joints. 3. ARRIVING BY BUS Florenc is the central bus station; located in the city centre, it is also directly adjacent to Prague subway’s station Florenc (a transfer station between the lines C and B). Like the central train station, Florenc has recently undergone a major facelift and now boasts a pleasant and clean arrivals & departures hall with kiosks and fast-foods (Burger King, anyone?), and most importantly a big screen showing the bus times and the respective platforms. 4. ARRIVING BY CAR Prague falls victim to traffic jams and a lack of legal parking spaces (streets with blue-marked areas on the side are reserved for residents and you run the risk of having your car towed if you park there). This is why we recommend using the so- called P+R’s (park and ride) parking places, situated near all highways. Find more info at www.dpp.cz/en/ parking. arriving 11

Prague’s public transportation system is generally reasonably clean, very efficient, runs on time, and its network spans the whole city; with the price of 26 CZK for a transfer ticket (1EUR / 1.3USD), it cannot be beat. If you don’t need to venture out of the center, you can confine to using the subway (or metro, as it’s callled here) and trams; buses service the further- away neighbourhoods. Let’s look more closely at the various tickets you can purchase. Tickets can be bought from the numerous vending machines in all the metro stations and at many tram stops (always keep coins at hand), or from most tobacco stores / kiosks. Short-term passes: provide unlimited travel within ticket validity. Well-worth getting if you use public transport every day. The 3 and 5-day passes allow free travel for any accompanying child aged between 6 and 14. 24-hour pass: 100 CZK 3-day pass: (72 hours): 330 CZK 5-day pass: (120 hours): 500 CZK One-off tickets: 30 minutes / 5 stops / no transfer ticket: 18 CZK 75 minutes transfer ticket: 26 CZK Remember to validate your ticket upon first entering the metro / boarding a tram or bus. (ie. slip the ticket into one of the yellow boxes and wait for the info to be stamped on it). For over 1000 years, Prague has served as the political, cultural and economic centre of the Czech state. Having been the seat of two Holy Roman Emperors during the gothic and renaissance periods, it also had the status of the Holy Roman Empire capital. Prague’s history commenced in the year 870, although evidence shows the area had been inhabited since the Stone Age. The city flourished during the 14th century, under the reign of King Charles IV, who, among other deeds, ordered the building of the famous Charles Bridge or Saint Vitus Cathedral, the oldest gothic cathedral in central Europe, and Charles University, the oldest university in central Europe. Prague was then the third-largest city in Europe. Now home to some 1.2 million inhabitants, Prague became the capital of the newly set up Czechoslovakia in 1918, with the end of WW I and the dissolution of the Austro-Hungarian Empire. In 1992, Prague’s historic center became a UNESCO world heritage site, and is currently one of the world’s most popular tourist destinations. Historical figures The most successful and influential of all Czech kings was Charles IV, who also became the Holy Roman Emperor. The Luxembourg dynasty represents the heights of Czech (Bohemian) statehood territorial and influence as well as advancement in many areas of human endeavors. Many people are considered national heroes and cultural icons, many national stories concern their lives. Jan Hus was a religious reformist from the 1400s. The teacher of nations Jan Amos Komenský is also considered a notable figure in Czech history. Josef Jungmann is often credited for expanding the modern Czech language, and preventing its extinction. Mythology There are also ancient folk stories about the Czech people, such as the Forefather Čech, who according to legend brought the tribe of Czechs into its land, or Přemysl, the Ploughman, who started the dynasty that ruled for 400 years until 1306. history of prague in a nutshell 13 KingCharlesIVIV SaintVitusCathedral

Old Town Square Nested in the heart of Prague’s historical centre, Old Town Square is overlooked by the majestic Gothic Týn Church and boasts the famous Astronomical Clock on the Old Town Hall. A must-see site and a good starting point of your visit. Jewish Quarter The Jewish Quarter is a stone’s throw from the Old Town Square and features the famous roster of synagogues: the Maisel, Pinkas, Spanish, Klaus or the Old-New Synagogue – the oldest working synagogue in Central Europe. Famous throughout the world is the Jewish Cemetery. Prague Castle Sitting on top of the Hradcany hill and overlooking the city, the Prague castle is the most significant Czech monument. A UNESCO World Heritage site, it comprises a series of palaces and ecclesiastical buildings of various architectural styles. Charles Bridge Arguably the most well-known site by tourists, Charles Bridge, built in 1357, crosses the Vltava river and provides stunning panoramatic views of the city and the Castle. Strahov Monastery The Strahov Monastery, built in 1140, is located next to the Prague castle and hosts a museum and a famous library, still containing an unbelievable number of rare volumes. Its magnificent library contains a collection of over 200,000 books. Vysehrad Often unjustly overlooked by tourists, Vysehrad, the so-called Castle on heights, is Prague’s original castle (built in the 10th century). You will be rewarded with astonishing views of the city and its bridges. prague´s most famous sites 14

EXHIBITIONS Story of the Planet Earth (Příběh planety Země) When you venture out on Wenceslas Square to the National Museum, you will find the “Story of the Planet Earth,” an exhibition located on the first floor of the museum’s exhibition hall. Spanning an area of 900 m2, you will find everything there is to know about our planet earth. Upon entering the exhibit, you will be immediately transported into space, where the main attraction is a model of the earth, which you can step right into. The first half of the left hall exhibits the period from the beginning of life on earth, up until the peak of the coral ecosystems. The second half exhibits the emergence of plant-life on earth, and their growth and development. Upon entering the right hall, you will be welcomed by a dinosaur skeleton, and you will then gradually see how the animals on this planet evolved. The entrance fee is 150 CZK, but is free on Mondays. Opening hours are from 10:00 to 18:00. Until July 6th, National Museum, Václavské náměstí 68, Prague 1, www.nm.cz Za svobodu – Be Free In case you’re interested in what it was like in Czechoslovakia in the 50’s, 70’s and 80’s of the 20th century, then the second exhibit in the National Museum entitled “Be Free” is right up your alley. The exhibit focuses on the spreading of free information and propaganda, presenting different views on specific events, the cultural atmosphere of the time, and the recurring dilemma of limited access to information. The exhibit is divided into two parts: The first is centered around the dark times of the 50’s, including the political processes, closed-off borders, and radical changes in the structure of society. It also shows how Czechoslovakia was able to receive information from the outside world, by dropping leaflets from Radio Free Europe balloons. The second part of the exhibit is aimed at the second two decades of communist totalitarianism in Czechoslovakia, which is one the one hand, characterized by ‘normalizing’ propaganda, but on the other hand, instigates the beginnings of what we know today: a free society. Until July 6th, National Museum, Václavské náměstí 68, Prague 1, www.nm.cz culture & events 18

culture & events CONCERTS Serj Tankian The singer of the metal band System of a Down has quite an experimental side. He plays around with music and with his vocal capabilities, so while in System of a Down his singing consisted mainly of shouting, in his solo career, he explores a whole new side of himself. His Prague concert will be held in the Incheba Arena in Holesovice, where Serj will be accompanied by a symphony orchestra, conducted by New Zealand’s John Psathase, who composed music based on Tankian’s debut album Elect the Dead. The result is something completely different than the singer’s album- which he essentially recorded on his own, playing nearly all the instruments himself. The concert starts at 20:00, and tickets are available only for standing. Tickets for the standing section closest to the stage go for 950 CZK, standing tickets in the second section go for 750 CZK. June 24th, Incheba Arena, Výstaviště, Prague 7, www.sazkaticket.cz Green Day In the past few years, it’s seemed that Green Day have taken a back seat to music. But in reality, they had been working hard on their new album. Their new album entitled 21st Century Breakdown was then released, and boasted great success, as it went on to win a Grammy for Best Rock Album. Suffice it to say, Green Day are simply masters at their craft. It didn’t take long for the album to climb to the top of the charts, and to continue on as the mouthpiece for the punk rock renaissance, which along with The Offspring, has been in play since the 90’s. They will play in the great outdoors of Prague in the exhibition grounds in Holesovice. The concert grounds will open early at 16:00, with Billy Talent’s singer as the opening act, performing a full one hour set, before Green Day take the stage, serenading their audience until late in the evening. Tickets can be purchased online at ticketpro. cz from 890 CZK to 1190 CZK. June 29th, Výstaviště Incheba Expo, Výstaviště 416, Prague 7, www.ticketpro.cz22

culture & events CONCERTS Aerosmith Aerosmith will hit up 11 European locations on their tour “Cocked, Locked, Ready to Rock”, not forgetting about Prague, of course. Now, the singer is just starting off his “Best Of” tour, and judging by the name, you already know what he has in store. His entire concert set will consist of his biggest hits: Kiss from a Rose, Crazy, and Amazing, just to name a few. Aside from serenading his audience with timeless classics, as a treat, Seal will perform some never before heard songs from his upcoming album. In light of the tour’s theme, Pink will perform outside under Prague’s summer sky, and as for a carnival- you can expect a spectacular circus show. Although Pink herself claims that there will not be as many acrobatic feats on this tour, there is already talk of the singer levitating on a giant ball above her audience in her upcoming shows. Ticket prices are divided into six categories, depending on whether you want to stand or sit. Standing tickets are available from 850 to 1100 CZK, and for sitting from 950 to 1490 CZK. The company’s actors includes some big names, such as Gabriel Thomson, whose claim to fame is the BBC 1 series, My Family. Matt Milburn is another noteworthy actor, having starred in the series Hollyokes. Even the group’s founders, Barrie Palmer and David Davides will take the spotlight in some of the productions. But of course don’t hesitate to see some of the Czech performances as well, as many applaud the domestic renditions of Shakespeare’s timeless plays.
