arriving8Welcome to Prague! Whetheryou’ve just landed, arrived bytrain, bus or car, we’ve got theall-important low down on how toreach the city center using all thepossible means of transportation, whether on a tight budget orotherwise.1. ARRIVING BY PLANEThe airport is located on the northwest edge ofPrague, some 20km (12 miles) from the city center.Although Prague boasts other, smaller airports, all international flights operate through Ruzyně.Important related phone numbers include +420 220113 314 (general info), +420 220 116 072 (baggageclaim) and +420 220 114 283 (lost & found).GETTING TO THE CITY CENTRE...If you’ve just arrived at the airport, getting downtownis generally, depending on the traffic, a matter ofsome 20 to 30 minutes (if you make use of a taxi ora shuttle service; see below), or 50 minutes if youuse the cheaper yet convenient and comfortablepublic transportation....BY PUBLIC TRANSPORTATIONBus presents the cheapest way of reaching Prague’scity center. It links the airport with the terminus ofone of Prague’s three subway lines. Use the ATMsin the arrivals hall to get Czech crowns, rather thanchanging money at the overpriced exchange offices. You can either buy your ticket from the kiosk or thetransport information desk in both arrival halls (open7AM – 10PM), from the coin vending machineslocated right at the bus stop platform, or directlyfrom the driver, although this will cost a couple extracrowns. The ticket price is 26 Czech crowns (1EUR / 1.3USD)for a transfer ticket that remains valid for the follow-up subway ride, or for a total of 75 minutes, plus anextra 13 crowns for larger pieces of luggage.

arrivingBUS # 119 – This will probably bemost people’s choice as the 119provides the quickest connectionto the historical center. Dependingon the time of day, it runs every 7to 20 minutes and gets you to theA line of Prague’s subway. Hop on,remember to validate your ticket, and don’t get off until the final stop(Dejvická). The subway entrance isnext to where you get off. The busruns from 4:18AM until 12:10 AM.BUS # 100 – The 100 bus links theairport with the B-line of the Praguesubway. Just get off at Zličín, thefinal stop. The 100 runs every 15minutes throughout the day andevery half hour after 7PM. Theride takes 15 minutes, but expectanother 20 minutes of subway rideif you’re aiming to reach the citycenter afterwards by metro. Thebus runs from 5:30AM until around11:50 PM.AIRPORT EXPRESS BUS – The AirportExpress bus service links the airportwith the Hlavni nadrazi train station;it runs every half hour and the ridetakes 40 minutes. Although partof Prague’s public transportationsystem, special fares apply: ticketscan be purchased solely from thedriver and run for 50 crowns (withno extra luggage fees). The AE runsfrom from 5:00AM to 10:00PM.TRAVELLING AT NIGHT – If you wantto use the public transportation atnight, look out for the # 510 bus, operating between midnight and3.30AM and linking the airport withthe tram at Divoka Sarka. Fromthere, take the tram # 51 to the citycenter. Note that the night bus runsevery 30 minutes....BY SHUTTLEVarious companies run shuttledoor-to-door services, or drop youoff at the city center. They aregenerally priced lower comparedto taxis, and can be easily foundoutside the terminals. The CEDAZminibus shuttles run every half hourand costs 120 crowns per person, dropping you off at the city center. The service operates between5:30AM and 9:30PM. CEDAZ willalso drive you directly to any givenaddress, but you need to pre-book(call +420 211 111 111 or go towww.cedaz.cz). Don’t shy away fromcontacting a competing company, but make sure to always check theprice beforehand! You shouldn’tever have to pay over 900 crowns.2. ARRIVING BY TRAINInternational trains arrive at thecentral station, Hlavní nádraží, oftenreferred to as Praha hl.n. The stationis directly connected with Prague’ssubway system and located right inthe city centre. If arriving after dark,we highly recommend hoppingon the subway (remember to buya ticket) rather than walking out andthrough the surrounding park. Mostof the station itself has just beenrefurbished and boasts a modernlook with plenty of kiosks, drugstores and fast-food joints.3. ARRIVING BY BUSFlorenc is the central bus station;located in the city centre, it isalso directly adjacent to Praguesubway’s station Florenc (a transferstation between the lines C and B).Like the central train station, Florenchas recently undergone a majorfacelift and now boasts a pleasantand clean arrivals & departureshall with kiosks and fast-foods(Burger King, anyone?), and mostimportantly a big screen showingthe bus times and the respectiveplatforms.4. ARRIVING BY CARPrague falls victim to traffic jamsand a lack of legal parking spaces(streets with blue-marked areas onthe side are reserved for residentsand you run the risk of having yourcar towed if you park there). This iswhy we recommend using the so-called P+R’s (park and ride) parkingplaces, situated near all highways.Find more info at www.dpp.cz/en/parking.International trains arrive at the11

Thiswas still in the 50’s and first halfof the 60’s, though from thesecond half of the 60’s the tonechanged drastically- the perioddrawings and descriptions showan outward display of pessimism, and the fear of the possibility ofa world-wide apocalypse onset bythe Cold War. Yet, this was a timewhen the Czech science fictiongenre flourished- and historywasn’t the thematic focus.16. 9.–29. 11., DOX Centre, Poupětova1, Prague 7, www.doxprague.orgculture & eventsAAAAAAAAAACCCCCCCChhihihihihihhipplplplpplpppexexexexexeeeofofofofoofofoGGGGGGGGHHHHHHHHHfafafafafafafaffafyoyoyoyoyoyyoyoy bbbbbbbb iiii

culture & events20EXHIBITIONSDECADENCE NOW!VISIONS OF EXCESSDecadence isa type of art whichalways speaksout against thetime period fromwhich it emerges, displaying blatantsigns of pessimismand dissatisfaction. This is why it creates sucha fuss, since it can be extremelycontroversial. It is an internationalproject, thematically divided intofive sections which logically andtopically progress from one to theother, creating a complete artisticexperience. The exhibit presentscontemporary artists and theirworks of art, entailing a vast arrayof mediums, such as painting, sculpture, photography and evenvideos, including “Room #13”,which enlightens viewers aboutmodern decadent trends in fashionand design.30. 9.– 2. 1., Rudolfinum Gallery, Alšovonábř. 79/12, Prague 1,www.decadencenow.czOLD CZECH LEGENDSThe exhibitionhas takenupon itselfthe taskto presentthe oldestCzech myths in traditional andcontemporary formats. Before thevery eyes of the visitors, charactersfrom the mythical family line ofPřemyslovci, as well as otherlegendary figures will be broughtback to life. While on the exhibitiongrounds, you will have a chance tolook at rare paintings, sculptures, books, illustrations, graphics, shooting targets, theatre costumes, coins and medals, as well asadvertisements and caricaturesfrom the 19th and 20th century, which contain strains of old Czechlegends.5. 10.-6. 7., National Museum, Václavskénám. 68, Prague 1, www.nm.czMETROPOLISThe exhibition ofCzech Republic’sleadingrepresentativesof street art andgraffiti was firstseen in the Czech pavilion duringthe 2011 Expo in China’s Shanghai, which boasted great success. Thepopularity of this type of art canmost easily be regarded in its clearand distinct artistic expression, which is very bold, but at the sametime easily understood. This formof expression does not rely ona deeper, theoretical knowledgeof art. Nor does it require you toknow any one language, or politicalcontext for that matter- streetart and graffiti is profound in thatit communicates solely throughvisuals. Fine examples of this areforerunners of the Czech art scene:Masker, Pasta, Tron, Skarf, Cryptic257 and Point, whose monumentalinstallations can be seen at theexhibition.16. 9.–29. 11., DOX Centre, Poupětova 1,Prague 7, www.doxprague.orgDaaloutimwdisianThis is why it creath ili d in traditional and

autumn and wine tasting begins56Internationally, Czechs areconsidered to be a nation ofbeer drinkers. This howeverdoesn’t change the fact that winein the Czech Republic is gainingpopularity, not to mention thealready existing long traditionwine has here, and can be tracedback to a very prominent figurein Czech history- Charles IV.Charles IV, King of the WinesAs we all know, wine has beengrown in Bohemia for ages now.It is assumed that wine growingwas introduced in South Moravia byRoman Legions who settled there.According to the legend, princessLudmila herself was a winegrower, and established the first vineyardin Melnik. Soon after came CharlesIV, who arguably became one ofthe most famous wine promotersin Bohemia. It was also thanksto him that vineyards spread toCentral Bohemia and Prague. Hecommanded his subjects to plantvineyards all across the country, andeven exempted them from taxesfor twelve years. Needless to say,he loved wine, and did his best tospread the word and endorse it.Although wine holds its traditionprimarily in Moravia, Charles IVensured that vineyards wouldspread even to Central Bohemia. In and around Prague the rulingwines were varieties of Pinot Noir, brought in by Charles IV fromBurgundy. Nowadays, you can onlyfind about a third of these wineriesin the vicinity of Prague. None theless, the harvest is still celebratedannually.Vendabe- Harvest CelebrationCorn farmers have their harvests,as do hop growers, and evenslivovice manufacturers havetheir plum harvest. It’s only fairthat wine growers have their ownharvest- Vendabe. This celebrationoriginally had a relatively simpleaim- it celebrated the beginningor the end of laborious work invineyards, and essentially the endof the harvest. If we were to takeit literally then, the harvest shouldbegin at the end of August, whenthe first grapes are being picked, orat the end of November, when thelast grapes are usually being picked.Irregardless, a tradition was madein autumn, preferably some time inSeptember or October. In Bohemia, wine celebrationsgained popularity just after the war, which means that there was a bigbreak during communism, as winecelebrations were seen as beinghostile to Soviet Socialist traditions. Before, such traditions were nota concern for the masses, that is,the harvest was celebrated onlyby the rich and upper classes. Now this is not the case, and theVendabe is celebrated in most bigcities with vineyards. If you wouldalso like to take part in this longcelebrated tradition, try visitingsome of these wine bars.
