Díky tomu všemu bude Plzeň v roce 2015 Evropským hlavním městem kultury. Pilsen was founded by the King Wenceslas II in 1295 at the confluence of four rivers: Radbuza, Mže, Úhlava and Úslava. Today’s Pilsen spans the area of almost 140 square kilometres and it has over 167,000 inhabitants. It is home to the bishopric and the university. Old craft and mercantile traditions are built upon by a number of businesses, mainly Škoda and Pilsner Urquell. In the sporting world, the fame of Pilsen is spread wide by FC Viktoria and HC Škoda. The lovers of culture arrive in Pilsen to attend various festivals, clubs, theatres, cinemas, galleries or a number of open-air events. Thanks to this, Pilsen will become the European Capital of Culture in 2015. Pilsen wurde im Jahr 1295 vom böhmischen König Václav II. am Zusammenfluss von vier Flüssen – Radbusa, Mies, Úhlava und Úslava – gegründet. Das heutige Pilsen nimmt eine Fläche von nahezu 140 km2 ein und hat mehr als 167 Tausend Einwohner. Die Stadt ist Bischofssitz und verfügt über eine Universität. Zahlreiche der heute in Pilsen ansässigen Unternehmen – allen voran die Škoda-Werke und die Pilsner-Urquell-Brauerei – knüpfen an alte Handwerks- und Geschäftstraditionen an. Evropské hlavní město kultury 20154 CZ/ Evropské hlavní město kultury 2015 Plzeň je žena! Něžná, emotivní, kulturní… Jaké je město, které turisté znají především jako kolébku světově proslulého ležáku? Plzeň je žena, křehká, citlivá a empatická. Tomu, kdo ji chce poznat, ukáže všechny svoje krásy a bude mu věrná. Chce se otevřít a zahrnout vás láskou. Dotkněte se jí, pohlaďte ji, dejte jí důvěru a zjistíte, že vám má co nabídnout. Plzeň byla vždy důležitou kulturní metropolí. Za průmyslové re- voluce se vyvázala z korzetu a začala se prát za svoje práva. Probuzené sebevědomí začalo ženským elementem oživovat všechny oblasti života. Druhá světová válka ochromila silné paže, jež ji objímaly, ale nepodlomila jí kolena. Po ní Plzeň znovu vyvalila sudy, naučila se anglicky a roztančila se. Líbali ji Ameri- čané, Britové, Belgičané, Francouzi. Otevřela se celému světu. DJ Kreml však brzy změnil desku a donutil ji zpívat jinou písnič- ku. Zavřel ji doma, převlékl do montérek a zneužil ji k nakrmení svých mocenských tužeb. Znásilněná, sedřená a šedá Plzeň se šourala z práce zaprášenými ulicemi. Klíče sametové revoluce ji naštěstí propustily z izolace. Znovu bojuje o sebedůvěru. Nejde jen o to, koupit si nové šaty a nalíčit se. Stejně jako většina žen i měst bývalého východního bloku musí znovu najít své místo ve společnosti, poznat sama sebe, vyzdvihnout své přednosti a přiznat si své nedostatky, vypovědět svůj příběh. Šance vybudovat lepší Plzeň Musí se očistit, osvěžit své sny a znovu nastoupit cestu pro- měny v sebevědomou dámu evropské kultury, jíž se stane v roce 2015. Jejím vzorem je Melina Mercouri, která před více než dvaceti lety založila projekt Evropské hlavní město kultury. Na její počest se Plzeň vždy v červnu oblékne do letních šatů a vítá tisíce lidí na řadě venkovních akcí. Zärtlich, kulturvoll, emotional… What is it like, the city that tourists know as the birthplace of the worldwide famous lager? Pilsen is a woman, fragile, sensitive and empathetic. She will disclose all of her beauties to those who want to know her and she will remain faithful. She wants to open herself, embrace you in her love. Touch her, stroke her, give her trust and you will find out she has much to offer. Pilsen has always been a cultural me- tropolis. During the Industrial Revolution it broke free of a corset and started fighting for her rights. The reawakened self-confidence breathed the female element into all areas of life. The WWII weakened the strong arms that embraced her but she remained strong in her knees. Once the war was over, the barrels were rolled into the streets, she learned English and broke into dance. She was kissed by the Americans, British, Belgians, French. She opened herself to the whole world. DJ Kremlin, however, changed the record and made it sing a different tune. He closed her home, got her dressed in overalls and abused her to satisfy his desire for power. Violated, torn and grey, Pilsen stumbled from work through dusty streets. The keys of the Velvet Revolu- tion, thankfully, woke her from isolation. Once again, she is fighting to win back her self-confidence. It’s not just about buying new clothes, making up her face. Same as most of the women and cities from the former Eastern bloc, she has to find her place in the society, get to know herself, emphasise her strengths, admit her weaknesses and tell her story. A chance to build a better Pilsen She has to clean herself, refresh her dreams and, once again, set on the path of transformation into a self-confident lady of the European culture which she will become in 2015. Her great inspiration is Melina Mercouri who, over 20 years ago, established the European Capital of Culture project. As a salute to her, Pilsen puts on a summer dress every June and welcomes thousands of people on a number of open-air events. Während der industriellen Revolution legte sie ihr Korsett ab und begann für ihre Rechte zu kämpfen. Das neu erweckte Selbstvertrauen hauchte allen Lebensbereichen ein weibliches Element ein. Der Zweite Weltkrieg lähmte die starken Arme, die sie umschlossen, doch er zwang sie nicht in die Knie – nach dem Krieg rollte die Stadt aufs Neue die Fässer heraus, begann Englisch zu lernen und tanzte. Sie wurde von Amerikanern, Briten, Belgiern und Franzosen geküsst und öffnete sich der ganzen Welt. Doch DJ Kreml wechselte bald die Platte und zwang sie, andere Lieder zu singen. Er schloss sie zu Hause ein, zog ihr Arbeitskleider an und missbrauchte sie zur Fütterung seiner Machtbedürfnisse. Die vergewaltigte, geschundene und graue Stadt schleppte sich nach der Arbeit durch staubige Straßen. Erst der Schlüssel der Samtenen Revolution befreite sie aus ihrer Isolation. Nun kämpft Pilsen erneut um Selbstvertrauen. Es geht nicht nur darum, neue Kleider zu kaufen und sich zu schminken. Wie die meisten Frauen müssen auch die Städte des ehemaligen Ostblocks erneut ihren Platz in der Gesellschaft finden, sich selbst kennenlernen, ihre Vorzüge betonen, sich ihre Schwächen eingestehen und ihre Geschichte erzählen. Die Chance zur Veränderung Es gilt also, den Staub von den Kleidern zu klopfen, Träume neu zu beleben und sich wieder in die selbstbewusste Dame der europäischen Kultur zu verwandeln, die Pilsen im Jahr 2015 sein wird. Ihr Vorbild ist Melina Mercouri, die vor mehr als zwanzig Jahren das Projekt „Kulturhauptstadt Europas“ ins Leben rief. Ihr zu Ehren zieht sich Pilsen alljährlich im Juni die Sommerkleider an und heißt Tausende Menschen zu zahlreichen Open-Air-Veranstaltungen willkommen. European Capital of Culture 2015 7 The Pilsener lager Pilsner Urquell belongs among the icons of the country. The history of the beer started in 1842 here in Pilsen. Since then its fame has spread worldwide and has become an inspiration for over two-thirds of pils beers produced globally. If you belong among the lovers of Pilsner beer, let yourself be invited for a tour in the brewery. You will see the very place where the Pilsner Urquell legend was born. You will see authentic places of the brewery that have been in operation since 1842, including its very heart – the historical and the current brew-house (photo 2) where you will see the state-of-the-art bottling plant. The tour is crowned by the visit to the brewery cellars (photo 1) where you can taste the unique non-filtered Pilsner Urquell, drawn directly from the oak lager barrels (only for visitors aged 18 and older). Evropské hlavní město kultury 20158 CZ/ Rozhovor s Evou Urbanovou Plácida Dominga bych pozvala do divadla Světoznámá sopranistka Eva Urbanová začínala v plzeňské opeře a dodnes se sem ráda vrací. I po letech strávených na předních světových scénách se tady cítí doma. Do Plzně jste přišla v teenagerovském věku, kdy se člověku skoro nic kolem něj nelíbí. Jak na vás tehdy město působilo? Nepřistěhovala jsem se přímo do Plzně, ale do vesnice Vrčeň u Nepomuku. Místo se líbilo mému otci, který měl moc rád lesy, a tady v okolí Plzně byly a ještě i jsou lesy moc krásné. Mohu říci, že i jako dítě jsem tady byla šťastná. Jaká je podle vás Plzeň teď? Myslím si, že Plzeň je město, kde jsou místa krásná i ta „ne- krásná“. Jako v jiných městech na světě. Jsem ráda, že je městem kulturním, kde jsou divadla, která přinášejí lidem ra- dost. S radostí jsem přivítala, že zde bude vybudováno nové divadlo a snad i koncertní sál. Jen doufám, že si tam budu moci ještě zazpívat. Koncertní sál v Plzni velmi chybí. Na která místa v Plzni se ráda vracíte? Samozřejmě se nejraději vracím do Divadla J. K. Tyla, které bylo svědkem mých prvních operních kroků a dodnes při vstu- pu do divadla cítím podporu lidí, kteří mne v Plzni hodně na- učili a už nejsou mezi námi. V duchu jim za to neustále děkuji a zdravím je, cítím jejich přítomnost v celém divadle. Pozvala byste sem své kolegy a přátele, třeba Plácida Dominga? Do Divadla J. K. Die weltbekannte Sopranistin Eva Urbanová begann ihre Karriere an der Pilsner Oper und kommt bis heute gern hierher zurück. Auch nach vielen Jahren, die sie an führenden Bühnen der Welt verbrachte, fühlt sie sich hier zuhause. You arrived in Pilsen as a teenager when people are usually quite un- happy about where they are. What impression had the city on you then? I did not move directly into Pilsen but to a village named Vrčeň near Nepomuk. My father liked the place, he loved forests and then the forests around Pilsen were still beautiful. I can say that as a child I was happy here. What is Pilsen like now from your perspective? I think Pilsen is a city with beautiful spots, as well as those “not-beautiful”. Same as everywhere in the world. I am happy that it is a city of culture, full of theatres that bring joy to people. I was excited at the news that a new theatre will be built here and perhaps even a concert hall. I just hope I will have a chance to sing there. A concert hall is something that Pilsen lacks very much. What places in Pilsen do you like returning to? Naturally, I love to return to J. K. Tyl’s The- atre where I made my first steps in opera and even today, when I go to the theatre, I feel the support of people who taught me a lot in Pilsen and have long passed away. Tyl’s Theatre. And I’m sure he would be happy to sing there. Sie sind als Teenager nach Pilsen gekommen, in einem Alter, wo man an seiner Umgebung meist Etliches auszusetzen hat. Wie hat die Stadt damals auf Sie gewirkt? Ich bin nicht direkt nach Pilsen gezogen, sondern in das Dorf Vrčeň bei Nepomuk. Der Ort gefiel meinem Vater, der den Wald sehr mochte, und hier in der Umgebung von Pilsen gab und gibt es sehr schöne Wälder. Ich kann sagen, dass ich auch als Kind hier glücklich war. Wie erscheint Ihnen Pilsen heute? Ich denke, Pilsen ist eine Stadt, in der es sowohl schöne als auch weniger schöne Orte gibt. Genau wie in anderen Städten der Welt. Ich bin froh, dass es eine Kul- turstadt ist, in der es Theater gibt, die den Menschen Freude bereiten. Ich freue mich sehr, dass hier ein neues Theater und vielleicht auch ein neuer Konzertsaal gebaut werden soll. Ich hoffe nur, dass ich dort noch singen kann. Ein Konzertsaal fehlt in Pilsen sehr. An welche Orte kehren Sie in Pilsen gern zurück? Am liebsten natürlich in das J.-K.-Tyl-The- ater, das Zeuge meiner ersten Schritte auf der Opernbühne war. Wenn ich das Theater betrete, spüre ich bis heute die Unterstützung von Menschen, von denen ich in Pilsen viel gelernt habe und die schon nicht mehr unter uns sind. Im Geiste bin ich ihnen dafür immer dankbar und grüße sie, ihre Gegenwart ist für mich im ganzen Theater zu spüren Würden Sie Ihre Kollegen und Freun- de hierher einladen, z.B. Plácido Domingo? Nejinak tomu bude i na počátku letošní- ho května. I tentokrát se srdce západních Čech zahalí do hvězd a pruhů a začne bít v rytmu motorů jeepů americké armády. Od pátku 3. května do pondělí 6. květ- na se lidé opět mohou těšit na pestrý program. Chybět v něm nebudou ani emotivní setkání s posledními válečný- mi veterány, historické vojenské kempy, fascinující kolona historických vozidel v ulicích města, víkendový program plný rozmanité muziky a další a další zajíma- vosti a novinky. Letos poprvé bude součástí Slavností svobody také Týden s armádou. Měs- to chystá zajímavou výstavu fotografií jednoho z amerických osvoboditelů. A atraktivní novinky připravují i milita- ry kluby. Proluka v Křižíkových sadech, prostor před KD Peklo a park za OC Plaza nabídnou ukázky každodenního vojenského života, výstavy zbraní, dobo- vé techniky a vozového parku, ale i te- matická setkání a zajímavosti z historie a vojenství. V neděli 5. května v 11 hodin vyjede na Klatovskou třídu dlouhá kolona his- torických vojenských vozidel, Convoy of Liberty, který každý rok sledují tisíce nadšených diváků. Největší ovace tu patří válečným veteránům, s nimiž se lidé setkávají po dojezdu kolony na ná- městí Republiky. Program květnových oslav vyvrcholí v pondělí 6. května v podvečer vzpomín- kovým pietním aktem u památníku „Díky, Ameriko!“ na Americké třídě. www.slavnostisvobody.cz Plzeň je posledním evropským městem, které na konci druhé světové války osvobodily západní armády. European Capital of Culture 2015 11 EN/ Liberation Festival By celebrating freedom Pilsen gives thanks to the U.S. Army DE/ Das Freiheitsfest Mit dem Freiheitsfest dankt Pilsen der amerikanischen Armee People from all over the world come here every year to celebrate, together with the city inhabitants, U.S. veterans and their families, the liberation of the city. The tradition will continue this May when the heart of Western Bohemia will wrap itself in the star-spangled banner, moving to the rhythm of the U.S. army Jeeps. The visitors can look forward to a varied program from Friday, May 3, to Monday, May 6. The program will include emotional meetings with the last surviving veterans, historical army camps, a fascinating convoy of historical vehicles through the centre of the city, a whole-weekend program full of music and other entertainment. This year, for the first time ever, the event will include a Week with the Army. The city is to open an interesting exhibition of photographs by one of the U.S. soldiers. Military clubs are working on some at- tractive innovations too. The vacant site in Křížíkovy sady, the room in front of the KD Peklo and the park behind the OC Plaza will offer re-enactment of scenes from everyday military life, exhibitions of weapons, military equipment and vehicles, as well as thematic meetings and discussions on interesting topics from the military history. On May 5, at 11 o’clock, a long train of historical military vehicles will drive through the Klatovská Avenue. The Convoy of Lib- erty is watched every year by thousands of excited fans. It is the war veterans who receive standing ovations when people meet them at the end of the ride on the Square of the Republic. The program of the May celebrations will culminate on Monday, May 6, in the evening by a commemorative event at the monument “Thanks, America!” on the American Avenue. www.slavnostisvobody.cz Jedes Jahr Anfang Mai kommen Besucher aus aller Welt nach Pilsen, um gemeinsam mit den Einwohnern der Stadt wie auch mit amerikanischen Veteranen und deren Familienangehörigen die Befreiung der Stadt zu feiern. Auch dieses Jahr wird sich das Herz Westböhmens wieder in Sterne und Streifen hüllen und im Rhythmus von Motorjeeps der amerikanischen Armee schlagen. Von Freitag, dem 3. Mai, bis Montag, den 6. Mai, kann man sich auf ein viel- seitiges Programm freuen, das neben emotionalen Begegnungen mit den letzten Kriegsveteranen, historischen Militärcamps und einer faszinierenden historischen Fahrzeugkolonne durch die Straßen der Stadt auch ein Wochenendprogramm mit abwechslungsreicher Musik und zahlreiche weitere Attraktionen umfasst. Im Rahmen der diesjährigen Festlich- keiten wird auch erstmals eine „Woche mit der Armee“ stattfinden. Die Stadt bereitet eine interessante Ausstellung mit Fotografien eines der amerikanischen Befreier vor. Und auch von den Military Clubs werden attraktive neue Veranstal- tungen organisiert. So werden in der sog. „Baulücke“ (Proluka) im Křižík-Park, auf dem Platz vor dem Kulturhaus „Peklo“ wie auch im Park hinter dem Einkaufs- zentrum Plaza Beispielszenen aus dem Militäralltag, Ausstellungen mit Waffen und zeitgenössischer Technik wie auch ein Fahrzeugpark zu sehen sein. Darüber hinaus sind thematische Begegnungen und Veranstaltungen zu Geschichte und Militärwesen geplant. Am Sonntag, dem 5. Mai, um 11 Uhr beginnt auf der Straße Klatovská třída der Convoy of Liberty – eine lange Kolonne historischer Militärfahrzeuge, die jedes Jahr tausende begeisterter Zuschauer anlockt. Der größte Beifall wird hier den Kriegsveteranen zuteil, denen man nach der Ankunft der Kolonne auf dem Platz der Republik persönlich begegnen kann. Höhepunkt des Festprogramms ist ein am Montag, dem 6. Since 1990, this event has been commemorated by opulent May celebrations. Pilsen war die letzte europäische Stadt, die am Ende des Zweiten Weltkriegs von den westlichen Alliierten befreit wurde. Seit 1990 wird daran im Mai mit einem großen Befreiungsfest erinnert.

Ulice a zákoutí města proto každým rokem ožívají koncerty, divadlem a dalšími akcemi, které sem vábí tisíce lidí z Česka i zahraničí. K pivu pořádnou muziku Oblíbeným místem k návštěvě letních koncertů je řadu let i nádvoří Plzeň- ského Prazdroje. Během prázdnin se tu každý čtvrtek představují zná- mé i začínající kapely. Publikum sem přichází za dobrou muzikou, skvělým pivem a samozřejmě i za kamarády a známými, jichž tady každý potká spoustu. Večery pod hvězdami si na- víc kladou za cíl hledat nové hvězdy hudební. Utkají se v nich vždy dvě kapely, které prošly nekompromisním výběrem poroty. That is why the streets and the corners of the city are enlivened by concerts, theatre and other events that attract thousands of people from the Czech Republic and abroad. Wenn es draußen schön ist, die Sonne scheint und die Luft nach Freiheit schmeckt, ist es eine Sünde, zuhause zu sitzen. Deshalb beleben sich die Straßen und Plätze der Stadt alljährlich mit Konzerten, Theateraufführungen und weiteren Veranstaltungen, die tausende Besucher aus Tschechien und aus dem Ausland anlocken. 2From music to a soup Živá ulice (photo 1) is the biggest open- air festival in Pilsen. It is thanks to this festival that the squares of the city are transformed in beating hearts and people flow through the streets as blood does through the circulatory system. The city simply lives its festival. This year, the event will start on the weekend of June 22 and 23 with puppet theatre (photo 3), concerts and the program for children in the city park. In mid-July, the echoes of the International Festival of Street Theatre will be showcased in the city streets to be followed by the festival peak in the early July, early August: a two-week program consisting of concerts, streets theatre, young fashion shows and a club night. The events will close in early Sep- tember by the Soup festival (photo 2). www.zivaulice.cz Good music to enjoy one’s beer The courtyard of the Pilsner Urquell brewery is a popular venue for summer concerts. Both established and up-and-coming bands present their music here every Thursday during the summer holiday. The audience arrives here to listen to good music, to enjoy delicious beer and, naturally, to meet friends of whom there are many. The evenings under the stars hope to find new stars of the music sky. Every evening, two bands selected by the uncompromising jury compete for the favour of the public. Eventually, the audience will select six bands that will present their music at the autumn Pilsner Fest. www.prazdrojvisit.cz Beseda does not sleep in summer The Mecca of Pilsen, Měšťanská beseda, does not sleep in summer either. The rays of the summer sun heat its garden with the unique Art Noveau gazebo. People come here to watch theatre, film screenings, dance evenings, minority genre music and major music stars who perform here at the Capricious Summer festival. This year the audience will hear AG Flek, Ivan Mládek & Banjo Band, Čechomor or songs by Michal Horáček. www.mestanskabeseda.cz Von der Musik zur Suppe Das größte Pilsner Open-Air-Festival ist das Festival „Živá ulice“ (Foto 1). In dieser Zeit wird der Platz der Republik zu einem pulsierenden Herzen, die umliegenden Straßen zu Adern, durch die unzählige Menschen strömen. Kurz gesagt: Die Stadt lebt. Das diesjährige Festival beginnt am Wochenende des 22. und 23. Juni mit Puppentheater (Foto 3), Konzerten und einem Kinderprogramm im Pilsner Parkring. Mitte Juli kommen – in Kor- respondenz zum Internationalen Prager Straßentheaterfestival „Za dveřmi“ – Stra- ßentheatervorstellungen an die Reihe. Die Zeit von Ende Juli bis Anfang August gehört dem Höhepunkt des Festivals: einem zweiwöchigen Programm mit Kon- zerten, Straßentheater, junger Mode und Clubnächten. Das Publikum kommt wegen der guten Musik, dem guten Bier und natürlich auch wegen der Freunde und Bekannten, die man hier meist in großer Zahl trifft. Zudem sollen die Abende unterm Sternenhimmel auch neue Sternchen der Musikszene ans Licht befördern. Es treten jeweils zwei Bands gegeneinander an, die bereits die strenge Auswahl durch eine Jury bestanden haben. This year, for instance, the festival will pay homage to two famous directors who will be celebrating their jubilee anniversaries: Juraj Jakubisko and Jiří Menzel, the muse of the Czech new wave Ester Krumbachová or writer Pavel Kohout. Children will no doubt appreciate a section dedicated to the cartoon master, Břetislav Pojar. The ZOOM part focused on the foreign cinema will present the recent production of German film studios. The Finals festival takes place from April 21 to April 27. www.festivalfinale.cz Country in Světovar What is peculiar about the Pilsen region is that it has only a single city. The rest is country, filled with villages and towns. And it is these country areas that will present themselves on the premises of the former Světovar brewery on April 19 and 20. The visitors will have the opportunity to walk a unique live map, taste the local specialities and witness many cultural performances. www.venkovplzni.cz The student spring celebrations Since 1990, the end of April has belonged to the students´ celebration of spring and love, the May festivities or the Mayales (photo 2). The king of the festivities is elected on April 26 in the centre of the city and the next day the most popular bands and singers arrive to the Lochotín amphitheatre and set the audience on fire. This year the spectators can look forward to Tomáš Klus, Kryštof, Mňága a Žďorp, Sto zvířat, Vypsaná fixa and others. www.plzen.majales.cz Music for the hard guys The fans of metal music will celebrate their feast in Pilsen from May 31 to June 2. The amphitheatre in Lochotín will host the fourth edition of Metafest Open Air, this year attended by bands such as King Diamond, Airbourne, Satyricon, Katatonia and many others. Selected neighbouring fields will be available for the visitors to stay overnight. www.metalfest.eu Filmtage mit deutschem Beigeschmack Das Filmfestival Finále (Foto 1, 3) umfasst sowohl einen Wettbewerbsteil als auch einen nicht-kompetitiven Rückblick auf die tschechische Filmproduktion der letzten zwölf Monate, einschließlich verschiedener filmischer Delikatessen. So werden z.B. dieses Jahr zwei Jubilare – die Regis- seure Juraj Jakubisek und Jiří Menzel – wie auch die Muse der tschechischen Neuen Welle Ester Krumbachová und der Schriftsteller Pavel Kohout gewürdigt. Kinder werden sich bestimmt über den Programmteil freuen, der dem Meister des Zeichentrickfilms Břetislav Pojar gewidmet ist. Chybět nemohou ani akce vonící tajemnem, jako by volně navazující na dávné legendy o otevírajících se pokladech. Gastronomický ráj V minulém století Plzeň mnohokrát hostila prestižní výstavy věnované jídlu a gastronomii. Na tyto tradice nyní na- vazuje Apetit Festival (foto 3). Koná se 18. a 19. května v areálu za OC Pla- za a jde o skutečné gurmánské slav- nosti. Lidé sem míří nejen za dobrým jídlem, ale i za atraktivním programem, v němž nechybějí ani populární ku- chařské osobnosti. www.apetitfestival.cz Tajuplné noci Čím dál větší oblibě se těší Festival muzejních nocí a Noc kostelů, kdy se veřejnosti otevírají jindy nepřístup- né prostory. Muzea, galerie a kostely během těchto nocí ožívají zajímavým programem a ty plzeňské takto ožijí 24. května. Lidé budou moci navští- vit třeba Západočeské muzeum, oba výstavní prostory Západočeské ga- lerie, katedrálu sv. This tradition is being built upon by the Appetite Festival (photo 3). It is held on May 18 and 19 on the premises of OC Plaza and it is a real gourmet feast. People come here not just for good food but for a rich program featuring famous chefs. www.apetitfestival.cz Mysterious nights The Festival of Museum Nights and The Night of Churches are increasingly popular. During these events, spaces that remain inaccessible open to the general public. Museums, galleries and churches put on interesting program and in Pilsen the event will take place on May 24. The visitors will have the opportunity to visit the Museum of West Bohemia, both exhibition spaces of the Gallery of West Bohemia, the St Bartholomew Cathedral or the small Church of Jesus. www.nockostelu.cz Spooks and folklore In mid June, spooks gather in Pilsen every year and their gathering is accompanied by folk music. This is the Historical Weekend (photo 1) which culminates by the night march of spooks through the centre of the city which simultaneously hosts the International Festival of Folk Music (CIOFF) (photo2).Thankstothetwoevents,theheart of the city beats vibrantly; there is laughter and a wide array of colours. It has become the host, for several times already, to the prestigious festival Tanec Praha. The event will provide the public with the opportunity to see the top dancers from the Czech Republic and abroad. Mai auf dem Gelände hinter dem Einkaufszentrum Plaza statt und es handelt sich um ein wirkliches Gourmetfest. Every June a part of the city transforms itself into a boulevard that hosts a trade of Pilsen art. The Melina Mercouri Days, commemorating the author of the European Capitals of Culture idea, present culture, art and leisure activities by which the city lives. They are held on two days, June 8 and 22, at the Anglické nábřeží. www.mesicmelinymercouri.cz One for all Open-air theatre performances have a long tradition in Pilsen. The theatre summer under the Pilsen sky (photo 2) is held on a different attractive place in the city centre every year and each year a comedy play is performed. This year it will be The Three Musketeers and the play will be performed from July 1 to July 18 in the Square of the Republic. www.divadelnileto.cz Jazz in the square The second Friday in July, the main square will belong to jazz music as it will host the Bohemia Jazz Fest, an itinerant project that moves across the squares of the Czech cities. The project was es- tablished by the renowned jazz guitarist Rudy Linka. Year by year he brings to the audience in the Central Europe his col- leagues who belong among the world´s best jazz musicians; their concerts are available to the audience for free. www.bohemiajazzfestival.cz The theatre harvest Just as the winemakers celebrate a suc- cessful harvest and boast their new wine, the theatres celebrate their successful seasons as well. They, too, like to boast the best they performed in the past year. That is why they meet in Pilsen every September at the International Theatre Festival (photo 1). Jeho dramaturgie je objevná, zajímavá a svěží. Na jaře uvedl taneční podobu dramatu Federica Garcíi Lorky. Hudbu k to- muto pozoruhodnému kusu napsala mladá česká houslistka Gabriela Vermelho. Bolero a Carmina burana Divadlo J. K. Tyla (foto 4) chystá na závěr sezony skutečnou la- hůdku: večer tvořený Ravelovým Bolerem a Carminou buranou bavorského skladatele Carla Orffa. Inscenaci studuje společně baletní a operní soubor a premiéra proběhne 8. června. Noc patří klubům Mladí lidé rádi tráví večery v klubech. Funguje jich tu řada a každému bije srdce v rytmu jiné hudby. V Anděl Music Baru v dubnu zahraje oblíbená pop-rock´n´rollová formace Sunflower Caravan. Music Café Mlýn zase zve na reviva- lový večer věnovaný zpěvákovi Petru Novákovi. V jednom z nejmenších plzeňských klubů, v Zach´s Pubu, v červnu zahraje Američan Richie Kotzen. Alternativní hudební scéna a mladé kapely mají domovské právo v Divadle pod lampou (foto 1, 2). Milovníky nejrůz- nějších odrůd jazzové hudby zase potěší Jazz Rock Café. V dubnu tu bude hrát třeba Rolling Stones Revival Prague, v květnu bluesová formace Stan The Man. Taneční kluby Plzeň je také doslova tanečním rájem. Uvolnit se při moderní hudbě a setřást ze sebe tíhu pracovního dne člověk může v Clu- bu PH+, Mefistu, Žumberské stodole nebo v Pantheon Music Clubu. Anebo si může dát malý okruh z jednoho klubu do druhého, neboť všechny leží blízko sebe v centru města. Večer co večer láká západočeská metropole vyrazit ven, do společnosti. A nezáleží na tom, zda člověk dává přednost zábavě vážnější nebo odvázanější, zda je příznivcem opery nebo moderní taneční hudby. Nabídek je tu dost a dost pro každého. 1 2

European Capital of Culture 2015 21 Bloody wedding The ballet troupe of J. K. Tyl’s Theatre (photo 3) belongs among the best in the country. Its dramaturgy is original, interesting and fresh. In the spring, the troupe staged the ballet version of the famous play by Federico García Lorca. The music was composed by young Czech violinist Gabriela Vermelho. Bolero and Carmina Burana J. K. Tyl’s Theatre (photo 4) is to offer a real treat at the end of the season: an evening consisting of Ravel’s Bolero and Carmina Burana by the Bavarian composer Carl Orff. It will be performed jointly by the ballet and opera troupes, opening on June 8. The night belongs to clubs Young people like to spend their nights in clubs. There are many clubs in Pilsen and each of them beats in the rhythm of a different genre. The popular pop’n’rock band Sunflower Caravan will have a gig in Anděl Music Bar in April. Music Café Mlýn is preparing a revival night dedicated to singer Petr Novák. The American Richie Kotzen will play in one of the smallest Pilsen clubs, Zach’s Pub, in June. The pod lampou theatre (photo 1, 2) is home to the alternative music scene and young bands. The lovers of jazz will be taken care of by Jazz Rock Café. Rolling Stones Revival Prague will perform here in April, the blues band Stan The Man in May. Dance clubs Pilsen is a dancer’s paradise. The oppor- tunities to shake away the worries of the working day are to be had in clubs such as ClubPH+,Mefisto,Žumberskástodola or Pantheon Music Club. Or you can take a tour of the clubs as all of them are close one to another in the city centre. Bluthochzeit Das Ballettensemble des J.-K.-Tyl-Theaters (Foto 3) ist eines der besten tschechischen Ensembles mit einer innovativen, interes- santen und erfrischenden Dramaturgie. Im Frühjahr hatte hier eine tänzerische Adaption von Federico García Lorcas Drama „Bluthochzeit“ Premiere. Die Musik zu diesem bemerkenswerten Stück stammt aus der Feder der jungen tschechischen Violinistin Gabriela Vermelho. Liebhaber verschiedenster Jazzrichtungen zieht es wiederum ins Jazz Rock Café. Dort spielt im April z.B. die Band Rolling Stones Revival Prague und im Mai die Blues-Band Stan The Man. Tanzclubs Pilsen ist ein wahres Tanzparadies. Bei moderner Musik abspannen und die Last des Arbeitstags abschütteln kann man z.B. im Club PH+, im Mefisto, im Club Žumberská stodola oder im Panthe- on Music Club. Dabei spielt es keine Rolle, ob man ernste oder heitere Muse bevorzugt, ob man Opernfan oder ein Freund moderner Tanzmusik ist. Angebote gibt es genug und es ist für jeden etwas dabei.

Evropské hlavní město kultury 201522 Klenoty z kostelů Jedním z nejlákavějších a zároveň nejnovějších turistických cílů je Muzeum církevního umění plzeňské diecéze. Sídlí v někdejším františkánském klášteře a ve dvou podlažích nabízí návštěvní- kům třeba monumentální dřevěné plastiky zobrazující čtrnáct pomocníků, nebo kolekci monstrancí nevyčíslitelné hodnoty. Pohled do včerejšků Západočeské muzeum otevřelo dvě nové stálé expozice. Expozice Pravěku (foto 1) seznamuje návštěvníky s pravěkým osídlením kraje od nejstarších dob do raného středověku. Ná- vštěvníci tu nejen vidí různé cenné a unikátní předměty, ale mohou si i sami vyzkoušet třeba drcení obilí nebo tkaní. Expo- zice věnovaná historii se věnuje rozmanitosti hmotné kultury na pozadí historických událostí, jakými byly husitské války, re- nesance, osvícenství nebo revoluční rok 1848. Giganti – Doba ledová Unikátní výstavu modelů zvířat z doby ledové (foto 2) zahájí 8. května Západočeské muzeum. Tyto trojrozměrné modely velkých pravěkých zvířat uvidíte v životní velikosti, a tvůrci vy- cházeli z dosud známých nálezů s cílem vytvořit co nejvěrnější podobu dnes nežijících živočichů. Potrvá do 23. června. Zastavení u pláten Dvě největší plzeňské galerie, Západočeská galerie a Gale- rie města Plzně, připravily na letní sezonu doslova záplavu poutavých výstav. V Galerii města Plzně (foto 3) se od dubna do září vystřídají představitel meziválečné avantgardy Karel Valter, mladí výtvarníci z Čech a Bavorska a postmodernista Tomáš Lahoda. Výstavní síň „13“ představí první dámu čes- ké poválečné lyrické abstrakce, Ludmilu Padrtovou (foto 4). A Masné krámy nabídnou ojedinělou příležitost prohlédnout si skvosty ze sbírek Národní galerie v Praze, jmenovitě ty, které vznikly v letech 1905 až 1939. Plzeň by mohla aspirovat na titul Metropole muzeí a galerií. Jen v historickém jádru města bychom jich napočítali dobrý tucet. There are at least a dozen of them in the historical centre of the city. They offer a rich exhibition program that will satisfy the lovers of both traditional and modern art. Church jewels The Museum of Church Art of the Pilsen Bishopric is one of the most attractive and also the most recent tourist destinations. It is based in the former Franciscan monastery and its two floors offer the visitors monumental wooden sculptures representing the fourteen holy helpers or a collection of priceless monstrances. A look back The Museum of West Bohemia has opened two new expositions (photo 1). The Prehistory exposition presents the visitors with the picture of settlement in the area from the oldest times to the early Middle Ages. The visitors will see precious and unique objects but they can also try their hand at various work tasks such as grinding of corn or weaving. The exposition dedicated to history is focused on the various aspects of material culture in the context of historical events such as the Hussite wars, Renaissance, Enligh- tenment or the revolutionary year 1848. Giants – the Ice Age The Museum of West Bohemia will launch a unique exhibition of Ice Age animals (photo 2) on May 8. The 3D models of the prehistoric animals will be presented in larger-than-life form and will be based on the current knowledge. The goal was to create the most truthful representation of now extinct animals. The exhibition will run until June 23. Painting exhibitions Two largest galleries in Pilsen, the Gallery of West Bohemia and the Gallery of the City of Pilsen, have a number of attractive exhibitions up their sleeves for summer. The Gallery of the City of Pilsen (photo 3) will host an exhibition of Karel Valter, a repre- sentative of in-between-war avant-garde, young artist from Bohemia and Bavaria and postmodernist Tomáš Lahoda. The “13” Výstavní síň will present the First Lady of the Czech post-war lyrical abstraction, Ludmila Padrtová (photo 4). And Masné krámy will offer a unique opportunity to see the treasures of the National Gallery in Prague, namely those created in the years 1905 to 1939. Juwelen der Kirchenkunst Eines der interessantesten und zudem neuesten Touristenziele ist das Museum für Kirchenkunst der Diözese Pilsen, das sich in einem ehemaligen Franziskaner- kloster befindet. Auf zwei Etagen können die Besucher hier z. B. die monumentalen Holzplastiken der vierzehn Nothelfer oder eine Monstranzensammlung von unschätzbarem Wert bewundern. Ein Blick in die Vergangenheit Das Westböhmische Museum hat zwei neue Dauerausstellungen eröffnet. Die Frühgeschichtsausstellung (Foto 1) macht den Besucher mit der prähistorischen Be- siedlung der Region vom Altertum bis ins frühe Mittelalter bekannt. Hier kann man nicht nur verschiedene wertvolle Unikate bewundern, sondern sich auch selbst beim Mahlen von Getreide oder an Webstühlen ausprobieren. Die zweite, die Historische Ausstellung ist der vielfältigen materiellen Kultur vor dem Hintergrund historischer Ereignisse wie z.B. der Hussitenkriege, der Renaissance, der Aufklärung oder dem Revolutionsjahr 1848 gewidmet. Giganten – die Eiszeit Eine einzigartige Ausstellung mit Nachbil- dungen von Eiszeittieren wird am 8. Mai im Westböhmischen Museum eröffnet. Die dreidimensionalen Modelle der großen prähistorischen Tiere (Foto 2) können dort in Lebensgröße bewundert werden. Die Schöpfer der Modelle sind dabei von bislang unbekannten Funden ausgegangen, mit dem Ziel, die heute ausgestorbenen Wesen möglichst naturgetreu nachzugestalten. Die Ausstellung ist bis zum 23. Juni zu sehen. Ein Rendezvous mit Bildern Die zwei größten Pilsner Galerien, die Westböhmische Galerie und die Galerie der Stadt Pilsen, haben für die Sommersaison buchstäblich eine Flut von interessanten Ausstellungen vorbereitet. Die Galerie der Stadt Pilsen (Foto 3) zeigt von April bis September wechselnde Ausstellungen mit Arbeiten des Zwischenkriegsavant- gardisten Karel Valter, junger bildender Künstler aus Böhmen und Bayern und des postmodernen Künstlers Tomáš Lahoda. Die Výstavní síň „13“ stellt die Grand Dame der tschechischen lyrischen Abstraktion der Nachkriegszeit, Ludmila Padrtová (Foto 4), vor. Im Ausstellungszentrum Masné krámy bietet sich die einzigartige Gelegenheit, Kostbarkeiten aus den Sammlungen der Nationalgalerie Prag zu sehen, insbesondere solche, die in den Jahren 1905 bis 1939 entstanden sind. Pilsen könnte sich um den Titel „Hauptstadt der Museen und Ga- lerien“ bewerben. Allein im historischen Stadtkern befindet sich gut ein Dutzend davon. Den Besucher erwartet ein reichhaltiges Aus- stellungsprogramm, bei dem sowohl Klassikfans als auch Freunde moderner Kunstrichtungen auf ihre Kosten kommen. 3 4

Tady totiž dávají šanci usednout za volant Lamborghini Gallardo, Ferrari F430, Porsche 911 GT3-optic nebo Hummeru H1. A taky něco pro děti A aby zkrátka nepřišly ani děti, je tu v centru města ve Štrun- cových sadech nový relax park (foto 3) se skateboardovými překážkami, lezeckou stěnou a mnoha hřišti. Nebo West Park (foto 1), který kousek od ZOO nabízí výlet do Ameriky 19. století. Kdo si jako ideální trávení volného času představuje pobyt v přírodě či u vody, pro toho je na severním okraji města rozsáhlá soustava Boleveckých rybníků, obklopená příjem- nými lesy s naučnými stezkami. A nudit se tu nebudou ani teenageři: funguje tu totiž půjčovna skákacích chůd nebo Ranč Šídlovák, odkud se dá vyrazit na vyjížďku na koni. Ať už jste do Plzně přijeli za pracovními povinnostmi nebo na pár dnů s rodinou, určitě chcete odjíždět s pocitem, že jste si to tu pěkně užili. Egal, ob Sie beruflich in Pilsen sind oder hier ein paar freie Tage mit Ihrer Familie verbringen – sicher wollen Sie mit dem Gefühl abreisen, dass Sie hier eine schöne Zeit hatten. Evropské hlavní město kultury 201526 CZ/ Sportovní vyžití nabízí adrenalin i relaxaci Kdo má rád vodu, pro toho je tu soustava Boleveckých rybníků (foto 3, 4), jejichž historie sahá až do poloviny 15. století. Jde o rekreační oblast, kde se vodní hladina potkává se zelení lesů a kde ruch moderního velkoměsta mizí jako mávnutím kouzelného proutku. Rybníky jsou snadno dostupné autem i městskou dopravou a vítají i vozíčkáře nebo návštěvníky se psy. Pro ty, kdo chtějí pobyt v přírodě spojit i s novými informacemi, tu jsou naučné stezky. U Boleveckých rybníků najdeme dvě: Sigmondovu s pravou kolomaznou pecí (foto 1) a stezku Sofronka. Další se nalézají u řeky Berounky či v údolí Úslavy. Adrenalin, green a koně Vyznavači adrenalinu a strmých skalních stěn si jistě najdou cestu na Ostrou Hůrku, na Radyni, na skály u Nečtin či na Ma- riinu skálu u Šťáhlavic. Pokud se jim nechce z města nikam jezdit, je tu pro ně nabídka lezeckých stěn. Třeba ve Sport Centru Koloseum na Lochotíně, Rock´n´Wall (foto 5) v sadech 5. května nebo ve Škoda sport parku v Plzni – Doudlevcích (foto 6). Ten nabízí vyžití i v dalších sportovních a adrenalino- vých aktivitách, podobně jako Škodaland u přehrady České údolí na jižním okraji města. Na milovníky golfového greenu pamatuje Plzeň především Driving range v Lobzích. Za klasickým hřištěm je však třeba vyrazit mimo město: do Darovanského dvora, do Golf Parku Plzeň v Dýšině (Foto 2), do Alfrédova nebo do Hořehled. A pro ty, jimž učaroval pohled na svět z koňského hřbetu, je tu i nabídka projížděk na koních. Zve k nim třeba Ranč Šídlovák, Jízdárna Dajbych v Trnové nebo jezdecký klub Wartov v Dobřanech. Plzeň sice bude v roce 2015 Evropským hlavním městem kultury, to ale vůbec neznamená, že by ve své nabídce zapomínala na milovníky sportu. Ba právě naopak! I její sportovní nabídka je bohatá a osloví jistě každého. 1 2

European Capital of Culture 2015 27 EN/ Sporting life offering both adrenalin and relax DE/ Sport für Adrenalin und Relaxing Pilsen will become the European Capital of Culture in 2015 but this does not mean that it forgets the fans of sport. Rather the contrary! The sporting offer is wide and everybody will find something for themselves. Whoever loves water will appreciate the complex of Bolevecké ponds (photo 3, 4) the history of which goes back to the mid-15th century. It is a recreational area where the water level meets the green of the forests and where the busy life of a modern city disappears as if by a magic wand. The ponds are easily accessible by car and by public transport and they are equally welcoming for the disabled or the visitors with dogs. Those who want to join the stay in nature with new information will no doubt appreciate the nature trails. There are two of them by the Bolevecké ponds: Sigmond’s path with authentic tar furnace (photo 1) and Sofronka. Others are located by the Berounka banks or the Úslava valley. Adrenaline, green and horses The lovers of adrenaline will no doubt find their way to Ostrá Hůrka, Radyně, rocks near Nečtině or Maria’s rock near Štáhlavice. If the readers do not want to leave the city, they can enjoy the wide offer of the boulder walls. The Sport Centre Ko- loseum at Lochotín, Rock’n’Wall (photo 5) in Sady on May 5 or Skoda sport park in Pilsen – Doudlevce (photo 6). The latter offers excitement in many sporting and adrenaline activities such as Škodaland at the České údolí dam at the southern outskirts of the city. The lovers of golf will no doubt be satisfied by the driving range in Lobze. If you want a fully-fledged classic green, however, you must head outside the city: the Darovanský court, Golf Park Plzeň Dýšina (photo 2), Alfrédov or Hořehledy. Those who have been fascinated by the horseback perspective will appreciate the horse ride offer. Horse rides are available from the following establishments: Ranč Šídlovák, Jízdárna Dajbych in Trnová or the equestrian club Wartov in Dobřany. Wen es z.B. ans Wasser zieht, der kann sich zu den Bolevecer Teichen begeben (Foto 3, 4). Die Geschichte dieses Teichsystems reicht bis ins 15. Jahrhundert zurück. Heute befindet sich hier ein Erholungsgebiet, das mit seinen Wasserflächen und dem Grün seiner Wälder den Großstadtlärm wie durch den Streich einer Zauberrute verblassen lässt. Die Teiche sind mit Auto und öffentlichem Nahverkehr leicht zu erreichen und heißen auch Rollstuhlfahrer und Besucher mit Hunden willkommen. Wer seinen Ausflug ins Grüne mit einer Erweiterung seiner Kenntnisse verbinden möchte, dem seien Lehrpfade empfohlen. An den Bolevecer Teichen gibt es davon gleich zwei: den Sigmond-Pfad, der an einem echten Wagenschmiereofen vor- beiführt (Foto 1), und den Sofronka-Pfad. Weitere Lehrpfade befinden sich u.a. am Fluss Berounka und im Flusstal der Úslava. Adrenalin, Golfgreen und Pferde Adrenalin-Junkies und Freunde steiler Felswände finden sicher den Weg nach Ostrá Hůrka, auf die Burg Radyně, auf die Felsen bei Nečtiny oder auf den Ma- rienfelsen bei Šťáhlavice. Für diejenigen, die Pilsen nicht verlassen möchten, gibt es auch in der Stadt Kletterwände. So z.B. im Sport-Center Koloseum in Pilsen- Lochotín, die Rock’n‘Wall (Foto 5) in der Allee des 5. Mai (sady 5. května) oder auch im Škoda-Sportpark in Pilsen-Doudlevce (Foto 6). In Letzterem kann man sich auch in anderen Sportarten und adrenalinstei- gernden Aktivitäten ausagieren, ebenso im Škodaland an der Talsperre České údolí am Südrand der Stadt. Freunden des Golfgreen sei die Driving Range in Pilsen-Lobzy empfohlen. Sucht man jedoch einen klassischen Golfplatz, muss man sich in die Umgebung der Stadt, zum Wellness-Hotel Darovanský dvůr, nach Golf Park Plzeň Dýšina (Foto 2), Alfrédov oder Hořehledy begeben. Und für diejenigen, die der Anblick eines Pferderückens in Verzückung versetzt, gibt es Gelegenheit zu einem Ausritt. Zu einem solchen lädt z.B. die Ranch Šídlovák, die Reitbahn Dajbych in Trnová oder der Reitclub Wartov in Dobřany ein. Pilsen ist 2015 Kulturhauptstadt Europas. Das heißt jedoch nicht, dass Sportbegeisterte zu kurz kommen. Ganz im Gegenteil! Auch das Sportangebot der Stadt ist vielfältig und hat für jeden etwas parat.5 6 3 4

Tady se návštěvníci setkávají tváří v tvář s vyhynulými druhohorními veleještěry. Aby byl zážitek ze ZOO ještě intenzivnější, mohou se sem lidé nechat odvézt speciálním vláčkem, který vyjíždí z náměstí Republiky. Na děti pamatují také rozmanité naučné stezky na okrajích města: Homolka s úkoly pro nejmenší, stezka Po stopách Františka Malocha, která vede třeba přes Čertův mlýn, či Sigmondova stezka vedoucí kolem jeskyně petrovských loupežníků a pravé kolomazné pece. S malými sportovními nadšenci mohou zase rodiče zajít na minigolf. V Plzni najdou hřiště Adventure Golf Plzeň (foto 4) na Bolevecké návsi, další v Borském parku, za třetím musejí vyjet kousek za Plzeň, pod zámek Kozel. Odvážnější děti dokonce mohou rodiče vynést až do oblak. Umožní jim to bohatá nabídka vyhlídkových letů z letiště v Líních, Letkově či Plasích. Venku i pod střechou Na děti jsou zaměřeny četné akce pod širým nebem. Často v centru města hrají loutková a pouliční divadla. Se svou nabídkou přichází i festival Živá ulice. Doslova rájem je pak červnový Historický víkend. A kam s dětmi, když venkovním aktivitám nepřeje počasí? K návštěvě zve Muzeum loutek (foto 5) a Muzeum strašidel na náměstí Republiky, Dům pohádek u ZOO, Pohádková země s postavičkami Vítězslavy Klimtové na Borech či Techmania (foto 3) plná úžasných zážitků ze světa vědy a techniky. I nejmenší návštěvníci města si mohou Plzeň pořádně užít. Pokud by donutili své rodiče navštívit úplně všechno, co jim západočeská metropole nabízí, nedělali by týden nic jiného. Plzeň je zkrátka pro děti rájem. 1 2

European Capital of Culture 2015 29 EN/ Pilsen for children With children to fairy-tales, animals or instruction DE/ Pilsen für Kinder Märchen, Tiere und lehrreiche Pfade Even the smallest visitors can enjoy Pilsen. If they made their parents visit everything the West Bohemian metropolis has to offer they would not do anything else for the whole week. Pilsen is a paradise for children. The large ZOO with a Dino park (photo 1, 2) is no doubt the biggest attraction. Here the visitors meet face to face with long extinguished Mesozoic lizards. To make the experience yet more intense, they can arrive here by a special train leaving from the Republic Square. There is also a number of nature trails around the city: Homolka with tasks for the smallest children, František Maloch trail that crosses Čertův mill or Sigmond’s trail around the cave of the Petrovští thieves and the authentic axle grease oven. Young lovers of sport can head to mini golf. In Pilsen, there is the Adventure Golf Plzeň course (photo 4) on Bolev- ecká náves, there is another in Bory park and the third one is located just off Pilsen under the Kozel castle. The more courageous among the children can take off into the skies. There is a wide offer of tourist flights available from airports in Líně, Letkov or Plasy. Outdoor and indoor There is a rich selection of open-air events for children. In the centre of the city, puppeteers and theatrical groups perform frequently. Many performances are staged during the Living Street festival and the Historical weekend is indeed a paradise for children. And where do you take you children when the weather does not allow to go out? There is the Museum of Puppets (photo 5) and Museum of Spooks in the square, the House of Fairy Tales near the ZOO, the Fairy Tale Land with the characters by Vítězslava Klimtová in Bory or Techmania (photo 3), presenting the great feats of science and technology. Die eindeutig größte Attraktion ist der weiträumige, reizvoll angelegte ZOO ein- schließlich eines Dinosaurierparks (Foto 1, 2), wo man von Angesicht zu Angesicht ausgestorbenen mesozoischen Sauriern begegnen kann. Damit das ZOO-Erlebnis noch eindrucksvoller wird, kann man vom Platz der Republik aus mit einem speziellen kleinen Zug hierherfahren. Etwas für Kinder sind auch die zahlreichen am Stadtrand befindlichen Lehrpfade: der Homolka-Pfad, der spannende Aufgaben für die Kleinsten bereithält, der über Čertův mlýn führende Pfad „Auf den Spuren František Malochs“, oder der Sigmond-Pfad, der an der Petrover Räuberhöhle und an einem historischen Ofen zur Herstellung von Wagenschmiere vorbeiführt. Kleine Sportfans können ihre Eltern zum Minigolf einladen. In Pilsen selbst stehen dafür der Golfclub Adventure Golf Pilsen (Foto 4) auf dem Bolevecer Dorfplatz wie auch ein Minigolf-Platz im Borský-Park zur Verfügung, eine dritte Möglichkeit befindet sich etwas außerhalb von Pilsen, beim Schloss Kozel. Mutigere Kinder können sich mit ihren Eltern sogar bis hoch in die Wolken erheben – dank des breiten Angebots an Aussichtsflügen von den Flugplätzen in Líně, Letkov und Plasy. Draußen und unterm Dach Auch viele Freilichtveranstaltungen sind auf Kinder ausgerichtet. So wird z.B. im Stadtzentrum oft Puppen- und Straßentheater gespielt. Und auch das Straßenfestival „Lebendige Straße“ (Živá ulice) hat Kindern einiges zu bieten. Ein wahres Paradies ist jedoch das Historische Wochenende im Juni. Doch wohin mit den Kindern, wenn einem das Wetter einen Strich durch die Rechnung macht? – Dann laden z.B. das Puppenmu- seum (Foto 5), das Gespenstermuseum am Platz der Republik, das Märchenhaus, der ZOO, das in der Straße Na Borech befindliche „Märchenland“ mit Figuren Vítězslava Klimtovás oder auch das Aus- stellungsgelände Techmania (Foto 3) mit fesselnden Erlebnissen aus Wissenschaft und Technik zu einem Besuch ein. Auch für die kleinsten Besucher hält Pilsen viele interessante Erlebnisse bereit. Würden sie ihre Eltern zwingen, alles zu besuchen, was die Stadt für sie in petto hat, so wäre man eine ganze Woche lang beschäftigt. Pilsen ist einfach ein Kinderparadies. 4 5 3 3

Výborná česká jídla nabízí i restaurace Na Spilce v areálu Pivovaru. Správně ošetřené pivo vám určitě nato- čí v restauraci Na Parkánu u Mlýnské strouhy, a kdo si ho chce zkusit natočit sám, ten by se měl vypravit do některé z restaurací The PUB v centru města. Plzeňské restaurace ale nabízejí i pes- trou mezinárodní kuchyni. Je tu in- dická a nepálská restaurace Everest, italská restaurace Budino, el Cid v Kři- žíkových sadech servíruje španělské pokrmy včetně tapasů, na jídlo sladké Francie zase zve el Cid v Kopeckého sadech. Vynikající středomořskou ku- chyni nabízí Restaurant Rango u ná- městí Republiky a milovníky kvalitní italské kuchyně potěší i návštěva re- staurace Pulcinella. Japonské sushi nabízí Zeke Sushi bar sousedící s Di- vadlem J. K. Tyla a skvělé steaky ochut- náte v restauraci PI.JEZ.PI či v Angus steak house restauraci. Kdo vyhledává kuchyni dietní či přímo vegetariánskou, pro toho je tu bistro Anděl v Bezručově ulici nebo Slunečni- ce v ulici Jungmannově. Báječnou kávu vám připraví třeba v Caffeterii Hardy (foto 1), v Ólala! Café na náměstí Republiky nebo v některém z řady Cross Café. A všude si k ní po- chopitelně můžete dát i nějakou vynika- jící sladkost. Láska prochází žaludkem, říká se. Snad i proto se může Plzeň pochlubit nevídaným množstvím restaurací, kaváren a cukráren. Prim v nich samozřejmě hraje tradiční česká kuchyně, ale nechybí ani nabídka jídel středomořských, indických, mexických, asijských a dalších. Řada z těchto podniků navíc v létě umožňuje svým hostům zastavit se uprostřed spěchajícího města a spočinout na předzahrádkách. The traditional Czech cuisine is naturally dominant but there is also an offer of Mediterranean, Indian, Mexican, Asian and other cuisines. A number of these establishment provide the opportunity to relax from the busy city on terraces and outside seating. Typical Czech meals such as pork with dumplings and sauerkraut or cream sauce are available from restaurants such as U Mansfelda, U Salzmannů, Na Spilce, Švejk restaurant, Restaurace a pivnice 12°. The restaurant Na Parkánu will as- tonish you with the quality of its beer. If you want to try to draw your beer yourself, you should head to one of the The PUB establishments. Pilsen restaurants, however, offer a rich international cuisine. There is the Indian and Nepal restaurant Everest, the Italian Budino, el Cid in Křižíkovy sady park which serves Spanish meals including tapas, while el Cid in Kopecký sady park specialises in the cuisine of sweet France. Great Mediterranean cuisine is offered by Restaurant Rango near the Republic Square and the lovers of the Italian cuisine will appreciate the offer of the Pulcinella restaurant. An erster Stelle steht hierbei natürlich die traditionelle böhmische Küche, doch es gibt auch ein vielfältiges Angebot an mediterranen, indischen, mexikanischen oder asiatischen Restaurants. Z jejího vyhlídkového ochozu ve výši 65 metrů uvidíte celé město jako na dlani. Plzeňská madona na hlavním oltáři katedrály patří mezi nejkrásnější české gotické sochy. Východní stranu kated- rály kryje z vnější strany kovaná barokní mříž zdobená hlavičkami andělíčků – mezi nimi se nachází tzv. andělíček pro štěstí. Poznáte ho snadno, je celý oblýs- kaný, a když jej pohladíte a budete si něco přát, určitě se vám to splní. Moderní kašny ve třech rozích ná- městí jsou dílem architekta Ondřeje Císlera. Zobrazují heraldické figury z městského znaku – anděla, velblou- da a chrtici. Ve čtvrtém rohu náměstí se nachází morový sloup z roku 1681 s barokní replikou plzeňské madony na vrcholu. Renesanční radnici 2 z roku 1558 zdobí četná sgrafita. V přízemí, v míst- nosti za mázhauzem, si můžete prohléd- nout model historického jádra města v měřítku 1:200. V sousedním Císař- ském domě sídlí Informační centrum města Plzně. Celé náměstí je doslova zhmotnělou učebnicí architektury. Vedle gotické ka- tedrály tu stojí domy renesanční, barokní, secesní, funkcionalistické i reprezentují- cí architekturu druhé poloviny 20. stole- tí. Na jižní straně náměstí se zachovaly renesanční domy s kamennými portály. V jednom z nich sídlí i Muzeum loutek 3 . Pamětní desky připomínají napří- klad pobyt vojevůdce Albrechta z Vald- štejna či císaře Rudolfa II. 1,5 hod. cca 2km Procházku Plzní nemůžeme začít nikde jinde než na náměstí Republiky. European Capital of Culture 2015 33 Z jižního rohu náměstí je vidět Velká synagoga 4 . Jedna z největších synagog na světě pojme více než ti- síc lidí. Postavena byla v roce 1892 v maursko-románském stylu. Ulicí B. Smetany dojdeme kolem ba- rokního kostela sv. Anny 5 a kla- sicistní budovy Studijní a vědecké knihovny Plzeňského kraje 6 (dříve kláštera dominikánek) k tzv. Brance v empírovém stylu, postavené na pozůstatku gotické městské brány. Za ní už se rozprostírá nádherný měst- ský sadový okruh založený v polovině 19. století na místě zbořených měst- ských hradeb. Odtud můžeme po pra- vé straně spatřit zadní část novorene- sanční budovy Velkého divadla 7 . V Kopeckého sadech poutá pozornost Měšťanská beseda 8 , nejvýznam- nější společenské centrum Plzeňanů. Historická budova skrývá nádherné secesní sály a salonky a také secesní kavárnu. Ve spodní části Kopeckého sadů se vyplatí odbočit Františkánskou ulicí k františkánskému klášteru, jenž patří mezi nejstarší stavby ve městě. Dnes zde sídlí Muzeum církevního umě- ní plzeňské diecéze 9 . Vrátíme se zpět a pokračujeme smě- rem k Západočeskému muzeu 10 , které se pyšní unikátní Městskou zbrojnicí s evropsky významnou sbír- kou gotických pušek. V Šafaříkových sadech nepřehlédněme drobné sou- soší plzeňských „rodáků“ Spejbla a Hurvínka, nejznámějších českých loutek. Sousední Křižíkovy sady zdobí největší český velkoplošný obraz. Dílo nazvané Theatrum Mundi 11 namalovali pl- zeňští malíři V. Čech a V. Kotyza přímo na fasádu jednoho domu v tzv. Prolu- ce. Námětem obrazu jsou významné plzeňské osobnosti. Podél Proluky s pozůstatky městských hradeb dojdeme až k Masným krá- mům 12 . Gotická stavba je dnes výstavní síní Západočeské galerie. Ze sousedního Pražského mostu je jedi- nečný pohled na romantickou Mlýn- skou strouhu. Někdejší vodní náhon má dnes podobu půvabného jezírka. Naproti Masným krámům stojí středo- věká vodárenská věž. Perlovou ulicí projdeme do ulice Vele- slavínovy k Pivovarskému muzeu 13 . Je to jediné muzeum svého druhu na světě, které sídlí v původním pivo- varnickém domě. Kromě prohlídkové trasy věnované vývoji pivovarnictví od starověku do současnosti, je odtud možné navštívit i plzeňské historic- ké podzemí. Tento spletitý labyrint chodeb, sklepů a studní byl pod měs- tem Plzní budován od 14. století. Také patří k nejrozsáhlejším v Čechách a jeho specialitou je ohromné množ- ství studní. Procházku centrem města můžeme stylově zakončit v Pražské ulici v nej- známější plzeňské pivnici U Salz- mannů. Dům s původním renesanč- ním bosovaným portálem nese jméno formana Martina Salzmanna, který v roce 1842 dovezl první várku Pra- zdroje do Prahy. Jen deset minut chůze od centra se nachází světoznámý pivovar Plzeň- ský Prazdroj 14 . Od Pivovarské- ho muzea pokračujeme okolo hotelu Courtyard by Marriott k Mlýnské strouze a odtud podchodem pod čtyřproudou komunikací do Štrunco- vých sadů. Za podchodem zabočíme doprava. Kolem rekonstruované budo- vy secesní Sokolovny a po lávce přes řeku dojdeme do pivovaru.

Evropské hlavní město kultury 201534 St Bartholomew’s Cathedral 1 boasts the highest church tower in Bohemia – it is 102.6 metres tall. The balcony at 65 metres gives you a great view of the whole city. The Madonna of Pilsen on the main altar of the cathedral belongs among the most beautiful Czech Gothic sculptures. The eastern side of the cathedral is protected by a Baroque grille, decorated by the heads of the angels, including the angel that brings happiness – you will find him easily as his head is quite worn since the legend has it that if you touch his head and say a wish, your wish will be fulfilled. Modern fountains in the three corners of the square have been designed by the architect Ondřej Císler. They represent three heraldic figures from the city’s coat-of-arms, namely an angel, a camel and a greyhound. In the fourth corner of the square there is a plague pillar of 1681 with the Baroque replica of the Pilsen madonna on top. The Renaissance town hall 2 of 1558 is decorated by numerous sgraffiti. Check out the 1:200 model of the historical centre on the ground floor, just behind the great hall. The neighbouring Emperor House is the home to the Information Centre of the City of Pilsen. The whole square is something like a textbook of architecture. The Gothic cathedral is neighboured by Renaissance, Baroque, Secessionist, Functionalist and late 20th century buildings. On the south side of the square you will find Renaissance houses with stone portals. One of these houses the Museum of the Puppets 3 . Plaques on the houses commemorate the stay of Adalbert of Wallenstein and the Emperor Rudolph II among others. The Great Synagogue 4 can be seen from the southern corner of the square. With capacity of over 1,000 people, it belongs among the largest synagogues in the world. It was built in 1892 in Moorish- Romanesque style. Bedřich Smetana street will take us past the Baroque Chuch of St Anna 5 and the Classicist building of The Education and Research Library of the Pilsener Region 6 (formerly a Dominican Cloister) to the so-called Gate, built in the Empire style on the place of the former Gothic City Gate. Behind it you will find a large municipal park, established in the mid- 19th century in the place of the former city walls. From here, you can see the rear side of the Neo-Renaissance building of the Big Theatre 7 . In Kopecký’s Park, Měšťanská beseda 8 , the most important cultural centre of Pilsen, attracts attention. The historical building has beautiful Art Nouveau halls, lounges and a Art Nouveau café. In the lower part of Kopecký’s Park take the Franciscan Street toward the Franciscan Monastery, one of the oldest buildings in the city. Today it houses the newly opened Museum of the Church Art of the Pilsen Bishopric 9 . We return back and continue towards the Museum of West Bohemia 10 boasting a unique Municipal Armoury with a great collection of Gothic guns. Don’t miss the statues of Spejbl and Hurvínek, the most famous Czech puppets and Pilsen “natives”, in the nearby Šafařík’s Park. The neighbouring Křižík’s Park is deco- rated by the largest Czech painting. The work called Theatrum mundi 11 was painted by the Pilsen painters Čech and Kotyza directly on the facade of one of the houses in the so-called Proluka (Gap Site). Famous Pilsen people are represented in the painting. Along Proluka with the remains of the city walls we will reach Masné krámy 12. This Gothic building serves today as the exhibition hall to the Gallery of West Bohemia. The neighbouring Prague Bridge offers a unique vista on Mlýnská strouha (Mill-race) which has been transformed into a romantic lake. The mediaeval water tower is situated just opposite Masné krámy. Perlová Street will take us to Veleslavín’s Street to the Brewery Museum 13. It is the world´s only museum of its kind, based directly in the brewery house. Besides the tour dedicated to the development of brewery from the ancient times to the present, you can visit the historical underground of Pilsen. This convoluted labyrinth of corridors, cellars and wells was built from the 14th century. It belongs among the vastest in the Czech Republic and contains numerous wells. A tour of the city can be – quite ap- propriately – concluded in the Prague Street, in the most famous Pilsen pub U Salzmannů. A house with the original Renaissance embossed portal bears the name of the wagoner Martin Salzmann who brought the first supply of Pilsner Urquell to Prague in 1842. If you want to visit the worldwide famous Pilsner Urquell brewery 14, you can continue from the Brewery Museum past the hotel Courtyard by Marriot to Mlýnská strouha and then take the underpass under the four-lane road to Štrunc’s Park. Take right after the underpass and go along the reconstructed Art Nouveau Sokolovna building, take the bridge over the road and you should reach the brewery in ten minutes. EN/ A tour through the vibrant heart of the city 1.5 hours, around 2km You cannot start a tour of Pilsen anywhere else than in the Republic Square. With its 193 x 139 metres, it was one of the largest Gothic squares in the Central Europe at the time when the city was founded.

European Capital of Culture 2015 35 DE/ Ein Bummel durch das pulsierende Herz der Stadt 1,5 Std., ca. 2km Ein Rundgang durch Pilsen kann nirgendwo anders beginnen als auf dem Náměstí Republiky. Dieser war mit einer Fläche von 193 x 139 m zur Zeit seiner Erbauung einer der größten gotischen Plätze Mitteleuropas. Die unmittelbar auf dem Platz befind- liche St.-Bartholomäus-Kathedrale 1 kann sich des höchsten Kirchturms in ganz Böhmen rühmen – er ist 102,6 Meter hoch und von seiner 65 Meter hohen Aussichtsplattform aus kann man die ganze Stadt überblicken. Die Pilsener Madonna am Hauptaltar der Kirche zählt zu den schönsten gotischen Skulpturen in Böhmen. Die Ostseite der Kathedrale ist außen von einem barocken, mit Engelsköpfen geschmückten Metall- gitter bedeckt, darunter auch der sog. Glücksengel. Wenn Sie ihn streicheln und sich dabei etwas wünschen, geht es bestimmt in Erfüllung. Die modernen Springbrunnen an drei Ecken des Platzes sind ein Werk des Architekten Ondřej Císler. Sie zeigen heraldische Figuren aus dem Pilsener Stadtwappen: einen Engel, ein Kamel und einen Windhund. In der vierten Ecke des Platzes steht eine Pestsäule aus dem Jahr 1681, an deren Spitze eine barocke Replik der Pilsener Madonna zu sehen ist. Ebenfalls auf dem Platz befindet sich das mit zahlreichen Sgraffiti verzierte Renaissance-Rathaus 2 aus dem Jahr 1558. Im Erdgeschoss des Gebäudes, in einem Raum hinter dem Maßhaus, kann man ein Modell des historischen Stadt- kerns im Maßstab 1:200 bewundern. Gleich nebenan, im Kaiserhaus, hat das Informationszentrum der Stadt seinen Sitz. Der ganze Platz ist quasi ein materiali- siertes Architekturlehrbuch: Neben der gotischen Kathedrale finden sich Renais- sance-, Barock- und Jugendstilhäuser, funktionalistische Gebäude wie auch Bauwerke aus der zweiten Hälfte des 20. Jahrhunderts. Auf der Südseite sind einige Renaissancehäuser mit Steinpor- talen erhalten geblieben. In einem davon ist das Puppenmuseum 3 ansässig. Vom südlichen Ende des Platzes aus ist die Große Synagoge 4 zu sehen. Sie wurde 1892 im maurisch-romanischen Stil erbaut und gehört mit einem Fassungsvermögen von mehr als tausend Menschen zu den größten Synagogen der Welt. Durch die Bedřich-Smetana-Straße gelangt man, vorbei an der barocken St.-Anna-Kirche 5 und dem klassizis- tischen Bau der Wissenschaftlichen Bibliothek der Region Pilsen (einem früheren Dominikanerinnenkloster) 6 , zur sog. Branka, einem auf den Überresten des gotischen Stadttors errichteten Empire-Gebäude. Dahinter beginnt das wunderschöne städtische Parkgelände, das Mitte des 19. Jahrhunderts anstelle der abgerissenen Stadtmauern ange- legt wurde. Von hier aus ist rechts der westliche Teil des im Neorenaissancestil erbauten Großen Theaters 7 zu sehen. Im Kopecký-Park zieht das wichtigste gesellschaftliche und kulturelle Zentrum der Pilsener, das ehemalige bürgerliche Vereinshaus Měšťanská beseda 8 , die Blicke auf sich. In dem historischen Gebäude befinden sich bezaubernde Jugendstilsäle und -salons wie auch ein Jugendstilcafé. Vom unteren Teil des Kopecký-Parks aus lohnt sich ein Abstecher in die Františ- kánská ulice zum Franziskanerkloster, das zu den ältesten Bauwerken der Stadt gehört. Heute hat dort das neu eröffnete Museum für Kirchenkunst der Diözese Pilsen 9 seinen Sitz. Kehren wir nun zum Ausgangspunkt unseres Abstechers zurück und setzen unseren Rundgang in Richtung des West- böhmischen Museums 10 fort. Dieses beherbergt u.a. die Städtische Rüstkam- mer mit einer europaweit bedeutsamen SammlunggotischerFlinten.ImŠafařík-Park sticht eine kleine Skulpturengruppe ins Auge, die zwei „gebürtige“ Pilsener zeigt: die wohl bekanntesten tschechischen Puppen Hurvínek und Spejbl. Im benachbarten Křižík-Park kann man das größte tschechische Wandbild be- wundern. Das Werk mit dem Titel Thea- trum Mundi 11 wurde von den Pilsener Malern V. Čech und V. Kotyza direkt auf eine Hausfassade in der sog. „Baulücke“ (Proluka) gemalt. Gegenstand des Bildes sind wichtige Pilsener Persönlichkeiten. Vorbei an der „Baulücke“ mit Überresten der Stadtmauer begeben wir uns zum gotischen Gebäude der Fleischbänke (Masné krámy) 12 , das heute als Ausstellungssaal der Westböhmischen Galerie dient. Von der benachbarten Prager Brücke aus bietet sich ein einzigartiger Blick auf den romantischen Mühlgraben (Mlýnská strouha). Der ehemalige Wassergraben hat heute die Form eines schönen kleinen Sees. Gegenüber den Fleischbänken steht der mittelalterliche Wasserturm. Durch die Perlová ulice gehen wir zum Brauereimuseum 13 in der Veleslavín- Straße. Dieses Museum ist als weltweit einziges seiner Art in einem ehemals brauberechtigten Haus untergebracht. Neben einem Besichtigungsrundgang zur Geschichte des Brauereiwesens kann man von hier aus auch die Pilsener historischen Keller besichtigen. Dieses aus verzweigten Gängen, Kellern und Brunnen bestehende Labyrinth wurde ab dem 14. Jahrhundert unter der Stadt errichtet. Es gehört zu den größten un- terirdischen Kellersystemen in Böhmen und seine Besonderheit besteht in einer außergewöhnlich großen Zahl an Brunnen. Unseren Bummel durch das Stadtzent- rum können wir stilvoll im bekanntesten Pilsener Bierlokal U Salzmannů in der Pražská ulice beenden. Das mit einem originalen Renaissance-Bossenportal versehene Haus trägt den Namen des Fuhrunternehmers Martin Salzmann, der 1842 die erste Ladung Pilsner Urquell nach Prag brachte. Wer noch die weltberühmte Pilsner- Urquell-Brauerei 14 besichtigen will, kann vom Brauereimuseum aus, vorbei am Hotel Courtyard by Marriott, zum Mühlgraben (Mlýnská strouha) und dann durch eine Unterführung unter einer vierspurigen Straße zum Štrunc-Park gehen. Nach der Unterführung muss man rechts abbiegen und gelangt, vorbei am rekonstruierten Jugendstilgebäude Sokolovna (Turnhalle) und über eine kleine Brücke, nach ca. zehn Minuten zur Brauerei.

Evropské hlavní město kultury 201536 Před sto lety vyráželi Plzeňané v neděli po obědě na korso. Tyto rodinné vycházky se odehrávaly v sadovém okruhu lemujícím historický střed města. Sady vznikaly v první polovině 19. století a postupně nahrazovaly bourané stře- dověké hradby. Zlatou érou sadového okruhu byla léta meziválečná, kdy se zde objevily i palmy a velké množství květin. Dodneška tu najdeme stromy, které nej- spíš to všechno pamatují. Třeba vícekmen- ný javor mléč před hotelem Slovan, velké platany U Branky či rozložité lípy mezi fot- balovým stadionem a sokolovnou. Lípy a ginkgo Dnes je sadový okruh nemovitou kultur- ní památkou. Tvoří ho kolem stovky stro- mů, mezi nimiž je nejvíce zastoupen čes- ký národní strom, lípa, a to hned několik jejích odrůd. Pozornost návštěvníků ale poutá i ginkgo biloba v Mlýnské strouze (foto 5) či dlouhé lusky katalp, děti jsou s podzimem nadšené množstvím kašta- nů pod jírovci. Památník obětem zla Sadový okruh (foto 2, 3) je rozlehlým par- kem, oázou lákající k odpočinku v tepa- jícím srdci města. Ještě klidnější oázu zvoucí k zastavení, zamyšlení a meditaci představuje Meditační zahrada (foto 1) s Památníkem obětem zla (foto 4). Nalé- zá se v Plzni – Doudlevcích. Svoji původ- ně ovocnou zahradu tu někdejší politický vězeň Luboš Hruška proměnil v okrasný park s množstvím zahradních dřevin. Poz- ději přidal i pískovcovou křížovou cestu, jež je dílem sochaře Romana Podrázské- ho. V kapli Maxmiliána Kolbeho se konají příležitostné bohoslužby. 2 1 CZ/ Sadový okruh a Meditační zahrada – klid ve městě i v duši

European Capital of Culture 2015 37 EN/ The Park Circuit and Meditation Garden – a peace in the city and the soul DE/ Der Parkring und der Meditationsgarten – Ruhepole für Stadt und Seele A hundred years ago the Pilseners used to go promenading after the Sunday lunch. The family walks took place in the park around the historical centre of the city. The park was created in the early 19th century and gradually replaced the de- molished mediaeval city walls. The years between the wars were the golden age of the park. There were even palms and a huge number of flowers. Even today we can find here trees that remember the era, such as the multi-stem maple in front of the Slovan hotel, large sycamores near U Branky or huge limes between the football stadium and Sokolovna gym. Limes and a ginkgo Today, the Park Circuit is a cultural herit- age. It consist of hundreds of trees, mostly consisting of the Czech national tree, lime, in several of its varieties. The attention of the visitors, however, is captivated by ginkgo biloba tree in Mlýnská strouha (photo 5) or long pods of the catalpa. In autumn, children are fascinated by a flood of chestnuts under the chestnut trees. Memorial to the Victims of Evil The Park Circuit (photo 2, 3) is a vast park, an oasis of calm providing relief in the puls- ing heart of the city. Yet an even calmer refuge is provided by the Meditation Garden (photo 1) with the Memorial to the Victims of Evil (photo 4). It is located in Pilsen – Doudlevce. The former political prisoner Luboš Hruška turned his garden into a park with many park trees. Later, The Way of the Cross made of limestone was added, designed by the sculptor Roman Podrázský. Occasional service is held in the Maxmilián Kolbe chapel. Die Pilsner Parks entstanden in der ersten Hälfte des 19. Jahrhunderts anstelle der abgerissenen mittelalterlichen Stadtmau- ern. Das goldene Zeitalter des Parkrings waren die Zwischenkriegsjahre, als es hier auch Palmen und viele Blumen gab. Bis heute stehen hier Bäume, die sich an all das vielleicht noch erinnern. So z.B. der mehrstämmige Spitzahorn vor dem Hotel Slovan, die großen Platanen am Stadttor oder die breitkronigen Linden zwischen dem Fußballstadion und der Sporthalle Sokolovna. Linden und Ginkgo Heute ist der Parkring ein Kulturdenkmal. Er besteht aus ca. hundert Bäumen. Am zahlreichsten vertreten ist der tschechische Nationalbaum, die Linde, und zwar gleich in verschiedenen Arten. Die Aufmerksamkeit der Besucher fesseln aber auch ein Ginkgo Biloba am Mühlgraben (Foto 5) oder die langen Schoten der Trompetenbäume. Kinder freuen sich im Herbst über die vielen Kastanien und Rosskastanien. Ein Denkmal für die Opfer des Bösen Der Parkring (Foto 2, 3) ist eine weit- läufige, zur Erholung verlockende Oase im pulsierenden Herzen der Stadt. Eine noch ruhigere Oase, die zum Innehalten, Nachdenken und Meditieren einlädt, ist der Meditationsgarten (Foto 1) mit dem Denkmal für die Opfer des Bösen (Foto 4). Er befindet sich in Pilsen-Doudlevce, wo der frühere politische Häftling Luboš Hruška seinen Obstgarten in einen Zierpark mit vielen Gartengehölzen um- gewandelt hat. Später ließ er noch einen Kreuzweg mit Sandsteinskulpturen des Bildhauers Roman Podrázský errichten. In der Maxmilian-Kolbe-Kapelle finden gelegentlich Gottesdienste statt. Vor hundert Jahren brachen die Pilsner sonntags nach dem Mittagessen zum Korso auf. Vrcholem všech akcí jsou bezesporu Chodské slavnosti (foto 2) a Vavřinec- ká pouť (foto 3) v Domažlicích a na ce- lém Chodsku. Tato jediná národopisná oblast Čech rozkvétá 9. až 11. srpna barvami starých krojů, vzduchem voní rozmanité pouťové dobroty a nad kra- jem se nesou lidové písničky s nezbyt- ným doprovodem dud. Za docela jinými zážitky se dá v ty- též dny vyrazit do klášterů v Plasích a Kladrubech (foto 1). Ty připomenou osobu svého stavitele jedinečnou akcí nazvanou Nocí ke hvězdám Santiniho Aichela. Na návštěvníky čeká noční nasvícení objektů, samostatná prohlíd- ka a hlavně hra s tajenkou, díky níž ob- jeví detaily, které jim za denního světla mohou snadno uniknout. Hrad Velhartice na počátku června přenese své návštěvníky do 14. stole- tí. Výlet do historie nabídnou i tradiční Historické slavnosti v Tachově, které se konají každoročně v půli srpna. Kromě toho zvou západočeské hrady a zámky i na řadu koncertů, divadelních představení či výstav. Na zámku Kozel například vystoupí 9. června přední český houslista Václav Hudeček se svými žáky. Na hradě a zámku Horšov- ský Týn (foto 4) bude od 1. května do konce září k vidění výstava kos- týmů a rekvizit ze seriálu Cirkus Hum- berto a výstava věnovaná osvobození regionu americkou armádou. The Chodské festivities (photo 2) and St Lawrence pilgrimage (photo 3) in Domažlice is the peak of the season. This unique part of Bohemia awakens from August 9 to 11 by the colours of old folk costumes, pilgrimage meals are served and the whole region resonates with folk songs accompanied by bagpipes. Quite different experience can be made in the same period in the monasteries in Plasy and Kladruby (photo 1). The event called Night to the Stars of Santini Aichel will commemorate the person of their great architect. The buildings will be lit in the night, tours will be available and there will be a puzzle game through which the visitors will discover details that they could easily miss in daylight. In early June the Velhartice castle will take its visitors to the 14th century. A trip to history will be offered by the traditional historical festival in Tachov, held as usually in mid August. Besides that the castles and chateaux in West Bohemia attract visitors to a number of concerts, theatre performances and exhibitions. The Kozel castle, for instance, will host, on June 9, a performance of the leading Czech violin player Václav Hudeček with his students. Horšovský Týn (photo 4) will put on, from May 1 to the end of September, an exhibition of costumes and props from the Circus Humberto series and an exhibition dedi- cated to the liberation of the region by the U.S. Army. August in den Farben alter Trachten leuchten, während die Luft vom Duft kulinarischer Wallfahrtsspezialitäten erfüllt ist und sich über die Landschaft Lieder zum nicht wegzudenkenden Klang der Dudelsäcke erheben. Ganz andere Erlebnisse locken zur selben Zeit in den Klöstern Plasy und Kladruby (Foto 1). Diese erinnern in einer einzigartigen Veranstaltung mit dem Namen „Santinis Sternennächte“ an ihren Erbauer Johann Santini Aichel. Auf den Besucher warten nächtlich beleuchtete Klostergebäude, ein eigenständiger Be- sichtigungsrundgang und vor allem ein Spiel mit einem Lösungswort, mit dessen Hilfe man Details entdecken kann, die einem bei Tageslicht leicht entgehen. Die Burg Velhartice entführt ihre Besucher Anfang Juni in das 14. Jahrhundert. Einen Ausflug in die Geschichte bieten auch die traditionellen Historischen Festtage in Tachov, die jedes Jahr Mitte August stattfinden. Außerdem laden die westböhmischen Burgen und Schlösser zu einer Reihe von Konzerten, Theatervorstellungen und Ausstellungen ein. So tritt z.B. auf Schloss Kozel am 9. Juni der prominente tschechische Violinist Václav Hudeček mit seinen Schülern auf. Auf der Schlossburg Horšovský Týn (Foto 4) wird vom 1. Mai bis Ende September eine Ausstellung mit Kostümen und Requisiten aus der tschechischen TV-Serie „Cirkus Hum- berto“ wie auch eine Ausstellung über die Befreiung der Region durch die amerikanische Armee zu sehen sein.
