“The LUX FILM PRIZE not only brings cinema closer to citizens, but Europe to Europeans. Through this prize,
the European Parliament promotes and supports Europe’s film industry at a time when it is threatened
by the ever-growing presence of online platforms, which are subject to little regulation compared to the
traditionalfilmsector.OurEuropeanidentityisnotonlymadeupofdifferenttraditionsandculturesbutalso
of common values: justice, freedom, tolerance. Since its creation, the LUX FILM PRIZE has included hundreds
ofdirectors,distributorsandproducers,allreinforcingandgivingstrengthtoouruniqueEuropeanidentity.”
Antonio Tajani
President of the European Parliament
“I firmly believe that European cinema is a major factor for deepening the European identity. The LUX FILM
PRIZEhasbecomeawindowfortheimageofEuropeanfilmsworld-wide.Inmyopinion,theLUXFILMPRIZEis
the greatest tool today for the promotion and marketing of the vibrant variety European cinema has to offer.
It enables award winning films to be subtitled in all official European Union languages and therefore to reach
a wider European audience.”
Evelyne Gebhardt
Vice-President of the European Parliament
“Cinema increases our knowledge about our own and other cultures. It raises awareness, awakens interest
and curiosity; it exposes and undoes stereotypes; and it brings to light multiple perspectives, makes visible
and challenges our values.”

...UNLOCKING DIALOGUE
11 years ago, the LUX FILM PRIZE began to explore new ways of crossing borders,
overcoming barriers and building bridges between people from different cultural and
national backgrounds. Cinema, as a cultural mass medium, harnesses the emotional power
of film to bring together the diversity of Europe and evokes the multifaceted, ever-changing
nature of our European identity.
Culture and film, as a cultural mass medium, are keys to unlocking dialogue between
communities and overcoming these barriers. They are ideal tools to address stereotypes
and prejudices, pave the way for intercultural dialogue and respond to the challenges
facing our societies.
This is exactly what the LUX FILM PRIZE is all about.
With the LUX FILM PRIZE catalogue, we want to invite you to discover more than 100
important, poignant masterpieces that will take you on a journey through Europe and
beyond. Look at your neighbour through the lens of emerging or already well-established
directors.
Use films to touch the hearts of European citizens and talk about the importance of being
united in our diversity.
See Europe in a different light.

Most European films are only shown in the country where they were made and are rarely
distributed across borders. The contrast is even bigger when we see that more than 60% of
films released are European, but these are only watched by one third of the cinema audience.
In this context, the European Parliament created the LUX FILM PRIZE in 2007. It has
enhanced both the distribution of quality European films and the European debate.
The 10 films in the LUX FILM PRIZE Official Selection unveiled at the Karlovy Vary Film
Festival are the showcase of European cinema. In particular, the selection of the 3 final
films in the LUX FILM PRIZE Competition, announced at the Venice Days, is closely followed
by the film industry. Their distribution is facilitated by Parliament´s support with subtitling
in the 24 official languages and the DCP [Digital Cinema Package] production per country.
Moreover, the LUX FILM PRIZE winner is also adapted for the visually and hearing impaired,
thus enlarging its audience and market potential.
The LUX FILM PRIZE films are also disseminated via the field of education. Partners from
different areas take advantage of the high quality film catalogue and also of the educational
kits that are produced in all the Official EU languages for each competing film since 2012.
The LUX FILM PRIZE filmography offers a wide variety of high quality films that echo the
European Parliament´s agenda at legislative level. These films portraying life in Europe are a
powerful communication tool to address the concerns of citizens from an array of angles, be
it human, passionate, expert, realistic or political.

The LUX FILM DAYS are a unique cultural experience which transcends borders. From
October until December, the LUX FILM DAYS create a temporary European Public Space in
which European cinema lovers can watch and share 3 remarkable films, in the 28 Member
States and in the 24 official European languages.
The screenings usually take place in cooperation with film festivals, cinematheques and
theatres. They are also often national previews. The three competing films are screened
more than 220 times across Europe, accompanied by educational kits in the corresponding
languages.
Herein lies the uniqueness of the European Parliament’s initiative. The LUX FILM DAYS is
an experience that can be shared across Europe no matter the language spoken. It creates
a platform for belonging to a European public space, by discussing the same topic in the
same place and at the same time.
As part of the wider reflection, the audience is invited to express and share their views
with other Europeans and to vote for their favourite film on luxprize.eu or on LUX FILM PRIZE
Facebook page, awarding an AUDIENCE MENTION.

A locked door inside a Belgrade apartment has kept one family separated from their past
for over 70 years. As the filmmaker begins an intimate conversation with her mother, the
political fault line running through their home reveals a house and a country haunted by
history. The chronicle of a family in Serbia turns into a searing portrait of an activist in times
of great turmoil, questioning the responsibility of each generation to fight for its future.

Rike - a doctor from Europe in her mid-30s - embodies a typically Western model of happiness and
success. She is educated, confident, determined and committed. We see Rike’s everyday life as an
overworked emergency doctor before she sets out on a much-needed holiday to Gibraltar. There she
fulfils a long-held dream and heads out to sea alone in her sailing boat. Her goal: Ascension Island in
the Atlantic Ocean. But her dream holiday is quickly broken off on the high seas, when, after a storm,
she finds herself near a stricken refugee boat. Unless she intervenes, around a hundred people will
drown – their completely overloaded boat has sprung a leak. Rike follows maritime law and radios
for help - legally, she is not obliged to do any more. But when her calls are left unanswered, and then
rejected on spurious grounds, she decides to overcome her fear and try to rescue whoever she can.

In the Donbass, a region of Eastern Ukraine, a hybrid war takes place, involving an open
armed conflict alongside killings and robberies on a mass scale perpetrated by separatist
gangs. In the Donbass, war is called peace, propaganda is uttered as truth and hatred is

The Silence of Others reveals the urgent and ongoing struggle of victims of Spain’s 40-year
dictatorship under General Franco, who continue to seek justice to this day. Filmed over six
years, the film follows victims and survivors as they organize the groundbreaking “Argentine
Lawsuit” and fight a state-imposed amnesia of crimes against humanity, in a country still
divided four decades into democracy.

mistaken for simple-minded, and Tancredi, a young nobleman cursed by his imagination.
Life in their isolated pastoral village Inviolata is dominated by the terrible Marchesa
Alfonsina de Luna, the queen of cigarettes. A loyal bond is sealed when Tancredi asks
Lazzaro to help him orchestrate his own kidnapping. This strange and improbable alliance
is a revelation for Lazzaro. A friendship so precious that it will travel in time and transport
Lazzaro in search of Tancredi. His first time in the big city, Lazzaro is like a fragment of the

On 22 July 2011 more than 500 youths at a political summer camp on an island outside
Oslo were attacked by an armed, right-wing extremist. Earlier that day he bombed a
Government building in Oslo, before making his way to Utøya island. In this first fictional
movie about the attack we get to know Kaja (18) and her friends. The movie starts when the
youngsters, shocked by the bombing in Oslo, are reassuring their relatives that they are far
away from the incident. Suddenly, the safe atmosphere is shattered when shots are heard.
We then follow Kaja as she tries to survive – minute by minute.

In A Ciambra, a small Romani community in Calabria, Pio Amato is desperate to grow up
fast. At 14, he drinks, smokes and is one of the few to easily slide between the region’s
factions – the local Italians, the African refugees and his fellow Romani. Pio follows his
older brother Cosimo everywhere, learning the necessary skills for life on the streets of
their hometown. When Cosimo disappears and things start to go wrong, Pio sets out to
prove he’s ready to step into his big brother’s shoes but soon finds himself faced with an
impossible decision that will show if he is truly ready to become a man.

Carla Simón has granted us access to a decisive moment in her own life. In a difficult,
painful and unique episode that would change her life forever, at just six years old she
found herself orphaned and struggling to find her place in an adoptive family while still
trying to come to terms with the loss of her biological one. The film explores this time with
great sensitivity, and is peppered with details that send us right back to childhood, with
all of its anxieties and unexpected twists: a time in our lives that is never all happiness,
laughter and fun.

It is a personal story, based on the director’s own experiences as a young boy growing up
in such a village – “A place full of contrast, where the sun shines for the longest time in the
country over the summer and the shortest time over the winter; a place where young kids
come to know animals, and often discover how nature and people can be both amazingly
beautiful and incredibly cruel,” Gudmundsson observed. “As a kid and a teenager, I used
to wish that I could show the grown-ups around me how our world really was. Now, as a
filmmaker, I want to do that – portray youth in a truthful way, as these years reflect our lives
in a very clear, beautiful and sometimes harsh manner.”

A group of aid workers tries to remove a cadaver from a well in an armed conflict zone.
The body was thrown into the well to contaminate the water and cut the water supply to the
local population. But circumstances soon turn a simple task into an impossible mission.
The workers cross the frenzied war landscape like guinea pigs in a maze, and there might
be no way out. A war inside another war, in which the only enemy could be irrationality.
The crisis they’re trying to solve is humanitarian, but they’re only human. Humour, drama,

In a secluded valley in Iceland, Gummi and Kiddi live side by side, tending to their sheep.
Their ancestral sheep-stock is considered one of the country’s best and the two brothers
are repeatedly awarded for their prized rams who carry an ancient lineage. Although
they share the land and a way of life, Gummi and Kiddi have not spoken to each other
in four decades. When a lethal disease suddenly infects Kiddi’s sheep, the entire valley
comes under threat. The authorities decide to cull all the animals in the area to contain
the outbreak. This is a near death sentence for the farmers, whose sheep are their main
source of income, and many abandon their land. But Gummi and Kiddi don’t give up so
easily – and each brother tries to stave off the disaster in his own fashion: Kiddi by using
his rifle and Gummi by using his wits. As the authorities close in the brothers will need to
come together to save the special breed passed down for generations, and themselves,
from extinction.

COMMITTEE EMPL, ECON, IMCO The film closely follows Thierry, a 51 year-old crane driver who has been out of work for
nearly two years. If nothing changes, he will soon be left with an income of just 500 euros
a month with which to support his family and ensure the future of his disabled son. His
desperate need of work leads to “humiliating” episodes in which he tries to make a good
impression and make himself look as accommodating as possible: a fruitless appointment
at the Job Centre, a job interview via Skype (“I’m going to be honest with you. There’s
very little chance of you being hired”), a discussion with his bank manager (“taking out
life insurance would allow you to face the future more calmly”), simulated recruitment
exercises in which his flaws (posture, politeness, expression, the power of his voice and
the rhythm of his speech) are closely scrutinised by people who are unemployed like him.

His latest observational documentary tells the story of 10 year-old Toto, who lives together
with his two sisters, Ana (17) and Andreea (14) and their drug-abusive uncles. They are
waiting for their mother to come back from prison after a 4 years absence. As the film
unveils, it delivers an intimate account of the lives of children growing up in a tough
environment. Each one of the siblings tries to push through the hard times in his very own
way. As Toto finds his new passion in dancing and learning how to read and write, his two
sisters are trying to keep their family together, in a world that has long forgotten what
childhood is all about.

takes a tough line in compelling her daughter to stay on the path of righteousness, her
father is often reticent and stands back during critical moments. Conflicts intensify as
arguments erupt with teachers and doctors. Desperate to please everyone, Maria soon

Ballús chose five people living on the outskirts of Barcelona and spent four years working
with them and writing the script, in which the protagonists play themselves. A hybrid of
documentary and fiction, the film, shot during the hottest part of the summer, combines
the stories of five people working on the outskirts of Barcelona whose paths cross every
day.Lurie,aMoldavianwrestlerwhoiswaitingforSpanishpapers,isworkingontheharvest
with farmer Raül. Raül took over the farm from his parents. The situation is precarious, as
an insect plague has infested his fields and is threatening to ruin the yield. Respiratory
problems have forced his neighbour Maria, an almost 90-year-old farmer, to move into an
old people’s home. There she meets geriatric nurse Rosemarie from the Philippines, who
has only been living in Spain for a short time and makes her way to work every day on foot.
On a dirt road near the highway, Maribel sits on a wobbly garden chair, trying to earn a
living for herself and her unemployed son as a prostitute.

Niko is in his late 20s and recently dropped out of college. He lives for the moment, oblivious
tohisgrowingstatusasanoutsideruntilonedayheisforcedtoconfronttheconsequencesof
his inaction. His girlfriend breaks up with him, his father cuts off his allowance, a psychiatrist
confirms his “emotional imbalance”, and a peculiar beauty returns from his past. But all Niko
wants is a decent cup of coffee. This tragicomedy is an ironic self-portrait of a young man
who drops out of university and ends up wandering the streets of Berlin. The film deals with
the desire to participate in life and the difficulty of finding one’s place.

Just a few kilometers east of the European Union border, right between Moldova and
Ukraine, lies Pridniestrovian Moldovan Republic. This thin strip of a land on the left bank
of the Nistru river with 518 000 citizens is not officially recognised by any other country.
A professional film has never been shot on this territory. Framed by the presidential
election, Fortress focuses on a couple of characters stuck in this geopolitical gap between
the European Union and Russia, in between capitalist present and soviet past, crime and
decency, decadence and hope for change.

a physician and is transferred, for disciplinary reasons, to a small hospital far away from
everything in a provincial backwater. Her lover, a foreign trade employee at Mannesmann
who she met on a spring night in East Berlin, is working to help her escape. She does
not care about anything around her: the patients, her colleagues, the neighbours, the
summer and the countryside. There is nothing holding her here anymore. Barbara is cold,
withdrawing from everyone and everything around her. That summer, her existence is
disturbed. She meets a physician, André, who was also transferred for disciplinary reasons.
André confuses Barbara. Did they put him on to her? Or has he fallen in love with her?
Barbara loses control – of herself, of love, of her life.

The performance of Shakespeare’s Julius Caesar comes to an end and the performers are
rewarded with rapturous applause. The lights go out; the actors leave the stage and return
to their cells. They are all inmates of the maximum security prison Rebibbia in Rome. One of
them comments: ‘Ever since I discovered art this cell has truly become a prison’. Filmmakers
Paolo and Vittorio Taviani spent six months following rehearsals for this stage production;
their film demonstrates how the universality of Shakespeare’s language helps the actors
to understand their roles and immerse themselves in the bard’s interplay of friendship and
betrayal, power, dishonesty and violence.

Narrated from beyond the grave by the protagonist, this animated feature-length
documentary tells the story of Crulic, a 33-year-old Romanian who died in a Polish prison
whilst on hunger strike. On July 11, 2007, an important Polish judge is robbed and around
500 Euros are withdrawn using his credit cards. On September 10, Crulic is accused of
the crime and brought to the Krakow Detention Centre, where he immediately starts a
hunger strike. Claiming he was in Italy on the day of the theft, his demands are clear: he
wants a meeting with a Romanian Consulate representative and another attorney. At the
beginning of 2008, Crulic’s deteriorating health prompts the court to release him. But it is
too late; the young man dies sixteen hours later.

Although he has lost his job, Michel lives happily with Marie-Claire. They’ve been in love
for 30 years, are fulfilled as parents and grand-parents, have close friends and are proud
of their trade union and political battles. This happiness, along with their French window,
is shattered when two young armed and masked men hit them, tie them up, pull off their
wedding rings and make off with their credit cards. Their distress is all the more acute when
they find out the attack was organised by a young worker made redundant at the same
time as Michel. However, they gradually discover that their attacker, Christophe, only acted
out of necessity; he lives alone with his two little brothers and does an admirable job of
looking after them, attending to their education and health. Their mother left them to live
her own life and they never knew their father. Michel and Marie-Claire thus decide to look
after the two little brothers while they wait for Christophe to be released from prison.

In central Gothenburg, Sweden, a group of black boys, aged 12-14, robbed other children
on about 70 occasions between 2006-2008. The thieves used an elaborate scheme called
the ‘brother trick’, involving advanced role-play and gang rhetoric. They did not have to
resort to physical violence or threats. Play is an astute and humorous observation, based
on real cases of bullying, that deliberately plays with preconceptions and our expectations
that it will all end badly.

January 1889, on the piazza Alberto in Turin, a weeping Nietzsche flung his arms around an

Marcel Marx, a former author and a well-known Bohemian, has retreated into a voluntary
exile in the port city of Le Havre, where he feels he has reached a closer rapport with the
people serving them in the honourable, but not too profitable, occupation of a shoe-shiner.
He has buried his dreams of a literary breakthrough and lives happily within the triangle
of his favourite bar, his work, and his wife Arletty, when fate suddenly throws in his path
an underage immigrant refugee from the darkest Africa. As Arletty at the same time gets
seriously ill and is bedridden, Marcel once more has to rise against the cold wall of human
indifference with his only weapon of innate optimism and the unwavering solidarity of the
people of his quartier, but against him stands the whole blind machinery of the Western
constitutionally governed state, this time represented by the dragnet of the police, moment
by moment drawing closer around the refugee boy.

Nelu, a man in his forties, works as a security guard at the local supermarket in Salonta,
a small town on the Romanian-Hungarian border. This is the place where many illegal
emigrants try to cross, by any means possible, into Hungary and then further afield to
Western Europe. For Nelu every day follows the same routine; fishing at dawn, then work,
and finally home to his wife Florica. They live alone in an isolated farm in the fields outside
town. One morning, Nelu ”fishes” something different from the river: a Turkish man trying
tocrosstheborder.Unabletocommunicateverbally,thetwomenneverthelessunderstand
each other. Nelu takes the stranger to his farm and gives him dry clothes, food and shelter.
In return, the Turkish man gives him all the money he has, asking him for help crossing the
border. Eventually, Nelu takes the money and promises he will help him the next day.

Gena is under no illusions about his situation: growing up without parents, receiving
an “education” from his criminal uncle, initial protection money rackets in the wake of
privatizations in the crumbling Soviet Union, and later international drug dealing. His
enemies are numerous but not easy to recognise; “life is short, the greater part of it already

existence between Asia and Europe for a “normal life”, he takes the plunge anyway. A
frantic chase across Europe ensues, heading west, presumably towards the sun.

PANDORA’NIN KUTUSU
When three 40-something siblings who live in Istanbul get a phone call and hear that their
aging mother has disappeared in northeastern Turkey [she was suffering from Alzheimer’s
disease], they put aside – for a while – all their differences, and they go search for her.
However, just like a Pandora box, old tension, animosities and unspoken family stories will
resurface. The three siblings must then reflect upon their own failures in life.

DELTA
A quiet young man returns to the wild, isolated landscape of the Delta. It is a labyrinth of
waterways, small islands and over-grown vegetation, where the villagers are cut off from
the outside world. The young man, who has been away since early childhood, is introduced
to a sister he never knew he had. She is frail and timid, but resolute when she decides to
join him in his run-down hut on the shore. Together they build a house on stilts in the
middle of the river, far away from everyone else. One day, they invite the villagers over to
share a meal together, but it becomes apparent that the coarse locals do not accept their
‘unnatural’ relationship.

Over the course of 13 years the crew has filmed 45 hours of images and recorded 90 hours of
sound material. This truly unique material offers a new look behind the scenes of international
politics in the late twentieth and early twenty-first century, and also into events in a post-
totalitarian country during its transition to democracy. Václav Havel was a key figure in the
great changes that took place in central and Eastern Europe in the 1990s – the film material
captures his work and influence both in his country and internationally. Among the truly
uniqueeventscapturedonfilmisBillClinton’sStatevisittotheCzechRepublicinJanuary1994,
including the private part of the visit, when he went to the Reduta jazz club in Prague. Other
events are the death of Havel’s wife Olga and her funeral in January 1996, the celebration
of his 60th birthday in the Archa Theatre, Prague, in October 1996, the forming of the new
governments after the elections of 1996, 1998, and 2002, and the preparations for, and course

The story of Tricks is told from a child’s point of view. The director focuses on Stefek, a
six-year-old boy, and his sister Elka, 17. It is the school holidays, and the little boy is at a
loose end; he tags along behind his sister, who works in a bar in the evenings and spends
her days preparing for a job interview with a large international company. One day, on a
station platform, they catch sight of their father, who abandoned the family when Stefek
was born. The boy takes destiny into his own hands: he sets in motion a chain of events
which he thinks will bring him closer to his father. Things go wrong, but Stefek does not
lose hope; he tries all kinds of tricks, culminating in the most risky one of all.

Despite the misgivings of his son Nejat, Ali, a widower, decides to move in with Yeter, a
prostitute who shares his Turkish origin. Nejat, a young German teacher, soon warms to
Yeter when he realises that she sends most of what she earns to her daughter in Turkey to
pay for her university education. Yeter’s accidental death drives a wedge between father
and son. Nejat goes to Istanbul to search for Ayten, Yeter’s daughter. He is unaware that
Ayten, a 20-year-old political activist, has fled to Germany to escape the Turkish police.
In Hamburg Ayten becomes friendly with Lotte, a German student, who is quickly won
over by the young Turkish woman’s charm and political commitment. Lotte even invites
Ayten to stay in her home, despite the qualms of her mother Susanne. Ayten is arrested
and put in detention, and ultimately deported to Turkey, where she is sent to prison. Lotte
decides on the spur of the moment to drop everything and go to Turkey, where she runs
into a brick wall of bureaucracy, with all her efforts to secure Ayten’s release seemingly
doomed to failure. She happens to meet Nejat and they become flatmates. A tragic event
prompts Susanne to travel to Istanbul to continue her daughter’s quest. As he grows closer
to Susanne, Nejat feels the need to be reconciled with his father, who now lives in Turkey,
by the Black Sea. He decides to go and look for him.

A family’s story, typically crazy and exceptional at the same time. A film about home and
exile, parents, grandparents, brothers and sisters and other relatives, close and distant, in
an extended Persian family. Some of them have emmigrated to Europe or America, though
the majority have stayed in Iran. Regardless of all the danger involved, they meet secretly
after 20 years at a place which won’t raise suspicion among the Iranian authorities: Mecca.
They come from America, Sweden, Austria and Iran to laugh, argue, cook and celebrate.
This is accompanied by an excessive amount of hugging and kissing, as well as a clash
between Muslim and Western cultures.

His long-standing and personally dangerous conflict with president Lukashenko. The title
refers to the demonstrations on Kalinovski Square after the elections on the 19th of March
2006 when Lukashenko “fixed” his victory with almost 83% of the votes. With his astonishing
material and ironic discourses Khashchavatski speaks out about resistance and persecution,
displaying an overwhelming will for freedom. The director uses satire and cinematic idioms
to give us a docu-comedy, making us laugh because this is too much, and it surely can’t be
true. But it is.
